Generally that would mean the person doesn't understand how instruments are built or what compression is...

Only very specific tonewoods add compression. Others add expansion. Some add juxtaposition.

Something like ironwood or cocobolo will add compression. It's more apparent as the size of the bass body increases--more wood, more compression. Build a good big slab body, fit a neck to it and sling it over your shoulder. Feel that sensation in your spine? That's compression.
