I requested that it be set up with Mittel GDA and Stark E. For the past bunch of years either that or Dominant GDA with Stark E has always been workable for me. The Weich set always feels too light for me, like an electric guitar with an .009 string set on it. John Goldsby makes Weichs sound great, though.

I have to agree with Mark.

The humidity this time of year cranks my action and makes the Orchestra G & D plus Stark A & E feel pretty darn stiff.

I always look forward to the fall for the bass to settle down.

A buddy gave me a set of Labella UB strings to try. Might swap them out at some point, but def won't sell my used Thomastiks this time around!

Hey, I have to update my last post. For the first time in recent memory my bass sounds good this time of year humidity and all. I think it is because I'm not using Spiros any more;)

Gut strings suck on outdoor gigs in the midwest in the middle of summer, I don't care what you weirdos think. I did it and it's the biggest thing that made me chuck them off my bass when I when back to spiros. My fingers stuck to them so bad I couldn't find a groove for ****.

+1. When I went from gut to Spiro Weichs I thought I had reached heaven. This was in the suburbs of D.C. in August; the gut just wasn't happening in that soup.

I'm using Gamut Pistoys and they are FANTASTIC in the hot, sticky mess of summer. They don't get sticky at all. I have no trouble getting around on them; I can solo all over the bass with ease. And since the bass is under way less tension than it was with Spiros, it hasn't gotten hard to play as the bass swells up. I had Gamut Lyons on last year and THEY got sticky and hard to play. When I had Spiros on, the bass just swelled up and got hard to play and very thumpy sounding-a very unpleasant experience. Seriously, this is the best the bass has ever sounded and/or played in July/August.

Marcus, I think that is because it is ALWAYS hot and humid where you are and your bass is acclimated to it. In our cases, the hot and humid arrives like a cream pie in the face, hangs around for a month to a month and a half or so and then goes away. My bass is always trying to adapt to the weather conditions. Makes me want to switch back to trombone sometimes. Now THERE'S an instrument that is impervious to climatic changes.

Asked, Don, and answered. I did take a look at the explanation and it is so complicated, I can't believe people just won't learn to read music. If you're smart enough to make heads or tails out of the tab system, learning to read music should be snap.

I just put on that set of Labella 7720 Mediums.

They seem to be in between Weichs and Mittels in terms of tension and size.

The decrease in tension feels ok - but it's weird not having that STARK on the bottom!

The D&A strings sound good. Not sure about the E yet. Hope the G settles down cuz it's boinging like a banjo right now.

Only reason I interjected this in the Spiro thread was because I was thinking about going back to a Weich G&D and Mittle A&E for better mobility.

Since this set of strings was free from a buddy, I figured on given' um a try before I eventually purchase some new spiros.

However, the gut conversation is interesting indeed.

I'm at that point with this set where they are starting to sound pretty dead for Spirocores. The G string sounds great, in fact depending on what's happening on the gig they all do. The E is a bit more lame however.

It's at this point I usually replace them. It's about 8 months in. I don't wanna spend any bread on strings right now though so for kicks I'm going to muscle on with them for a little while longer and see what happens.

I might cave in on the E string though and just swap out that. It's pretty dead.

Oddly, I'm not thinking about putting on Guts or swapping out G strings or anything like that. I'd rather spend what practice time I have learning how to play all over again. New teacher is kicking my ass. Her sensitivity to the bow and persistence in teaching an old dog new tricks, including breaking old bad habits is inspiring.
