Thomastik-Infeld jazz flatwound six-string set 0.033 - 0.135

I have a '92 Yamaha TRB6P that I've been running with a fairly generic set of nickel round wounds (D'Addario XL) due to their reasonably low cost. They're ok, but I've always felt such a good-sounding bass deserved a better-sounding string.

Some recent gigging down-time due to a hip replacement prompted me to go online and order a set of Thomastik jazz flats. I've had extensive experience with the TJFs over the past 25 odd years so I'm reasonably familiar with the tone profile i.e. the type of basses they'll suit and vice-versa. I was sure they'd suit the TRB6 - especially with the Piezo.

The price put me off at first, ($185 AUD), but being cashed-up, I decided to just bite the bullet and order them. They arrived and I put them on the bass yesterday, tuned up, reset the intonation (no truss adjustment required), and played for about four hours through my Mark CMD 121P to a wide variety of music - jazz, rock, folk, new-wave house/techno etc. They're now at the point where they're starting to feel 'played in'.

I must say I'm very pleased with them. They are a really great match for this bass. Creamy highs, beautiful punchy velvet midrange, and a nice thick low end on both magnetic pickup and piezo settings. The B string sounds very full and fat. I'll probably keep them on indefinitely.

Behold, the red silks...

I used to think TI strings were expensive. Now I think they might be the most economical choice. They last forever.

And there just isn’t anything else with the feel and sound.

I might sell a bass, but the TI set is not going with departing bass. The strings will move on to the next bass.

Just tried my first set of TI jazz rounds after years of TI flats. I don’t know why I didn’t try the jazz rounds sooner. Great strings!

That is a beautiful bass, @ToddB1963 !
Thank you, it sounds good too. The Thomastik jazz flats really suit it. Tension is just right. The B string is excellent.

I’ve yet to try TI Jazz Flats or Rounds. But I am definitely curious about both. Reading posts like this makes me want to place an order… 🤔 Maybe after the holidays. I’ve spent enough already on Christmas!

What bass will you be putting them on?

I’m thinking of trying TI’s on this recently acquired pair of Godin Freeway 4 basses. Rounds on one and flats on the other. Which bass gets which string is basically a coin flip. Might come down to silk colour 😂

Very nice.

Just be aware that the TI jazz flats are a low-tension string.

If you have a light touch, they won't be a problem.

Anyone have any experience with TIs on an l-1000?
Yes. They’re great, and the MFD pickup really accentuates the mid-range character of the strings, to the extent that I felt the need to lower the pickup as far as it would go to tame it a bit. As you’ll know, it’s a high-output pickup, so you don’t really lose anything by doing this.

This thread is about the 6-string set, though, so talk of L-1000s probably constitutes a derailment. Apologies to @ToddB1963 for the indulgence.

No derailment.

No problem at all.

Merry Christmas :)
