I bought one of these basses after talking to Steve on the phone. He was very enthusiastic and accommodating. Shipping was resonable and fast. It was my first upright purchase and I am happy with the bass with my limited experience. It is a very nice looking bass that is well made with a nice finish and detail. I feel like this bass will hold up for a long time. I am happy with the sound for a bass in this price range. I do believe that I will upgrade to a hybrid or carved bass when I can afford and would consider dealing with this company again.
I'm glad your happy with the Thompson bass. I'm starting to look at getting an upright, and there are many good online stores, but I don't imagine how I can properly decide what to buy over the Internet, without actually touching or playing the bass to be bought. How did you make this leap of faith, giving your money for a bass you never touched, nor heard? Is this how people are buying basses nowadays?
I purchased a bass from Steve (not a thompson) and I can tell you that you don't pay for it before getting to play it.
He sent it to me air freight and let me try it for a week before deciding whether to send it back or keep it. The cost of shipping was less than it would have cost me to get out there to try the bass out, and the only disadvantage was that I didn't get to compare it to the other basses he had in stock.
I did manage to get several local symphony musicians to look at it and did side-by-side comparisons to other basses here though.
Thor,
Enjoy your new bass and thanks for the report. It may, in fact, be only as good as some costing 2.681482 times as much but since you just bought it most of us would allow you to stretch the point a bit.
I looks nice enough. How is the low E volume compaired to say the open D? (I am still l0oking for a durable db with some bottome end.)
