Thoughts on Keith Moon

I know he technichally wasnt a bassist, but I heard My Generation on the radio the other day, and his fills are just amazing. Feeling inspired, I went back and listened to their whole catalogue and Keith (not to mention John) blew me away on almost every song. I dont know why he gets so much hate from drummers... anyway, anyone else have any thoughts on the late, great Moon the Loon?

I don't really think there's ever been another drummer like him. Barely even used a hihat.
He was really more of a percussionist.
I think he was phenomenal.

Keith was right up there with Bonham & Ginger Baker.

I was surprised to recently find out that Baker is still alive. Considering the life he's led, it was a shock to me.

I loved his playing--it fit the WHo perfectly--it was part of the mix.
Hearing those songs played by other drummers is never quite the same.

but I may have had a problem playing bass with him.

Exactly--and another reason Who songs never quite sound the same these days.

I think he was a very original drummer, unique for sure. But IMO, not even close to being in the same league as Ginger Baker.

Really? Ive always thought Ginger's fills were rather clumsy

Townshend has had some less than positive statements about Moon's playing.

I'm probably going to get flamed for saying so, but I always thought Keith Moon was a bit of a hack. Crazy, constant fills, it sometimes seemed like he never played the same beat twice in the same song. He was a crazy man who played the drums like a crazy man. He was far from talentless, but I always felt his manic style sounded a little immature. By the way, I loved The Who, so his crazy style never got in my way of enjoying their music.
