Thoughts on Roadworn Fenders

To each his own, as they say - but I could never understand the whole "relic - road worn" thing. I played a Fender "road worn" Precision at Best Buy, and although it played and sounded good, I cannot see paying almost $1,000 for a new bass that has been artificially mistreated. Just my 2 cents ---

Your opinion is your own, but you've never handled one of these basses. If you've read the posts here, most weren't jazzed by the relic'd body. However, they kept an open mind and found it played well. Seems ignorant to judge a book by its cover.

Ok...I was not really so much "knocking it" more than in my own opinion I just stated that they looked phony to me with the road worn finish is all. Even if others were not jazzed by the finish, I was still voicing my opinion. They may be great basses and may be for other people. And given the last response you seemed pretty quick to judge me off what I said.

I kinda dug these when I played em. Price point was a bit high for what they were though.

One thing, Every scratch on my bass I bought in 79 has a story, and usually a gig, attached to it. The wedding where the drunk Frat boys tripped on it and scarred the neck, the big gouge in the side where it fell out of the case at London Heathrow, the crack in the Poly from the bad winter I accidentally set it too close to the humidifier while I played with my then Toddler daughter are all from my life. These are what make basses unique. I like putting the war scars in myself. My bass is a personal history book. That is waaay cool to me.

Relics are cool, but even cooler when you DIY.;) I encourage you to DIY your own relic.

I apologize if I came off as rude. This is Talkbass, a place I know to be a location mostly free of flame wars. I'm not super hip on relicing either, but I know how nice a thin nitro coat feels. I really directed this thread to those who have actually handled these basses.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean coat of clear poly? :eyebrow:
As far as I can tell there is only nitro, and it wears off fast.

IMHO, these sound and feel like old Fender basses—good ones!

However, the stock strings on both the P and Jazz are the Fender 7250ML Nickel Plated Steel (.045, .065, .080, .100 Gauges). They are fine, but nicely zingy when new—which may or may not appeal to you.

Agree completely. Personally, I prefer to do my own "roadwear" and I cannot understand why you would want to pay premium dollars for a bass that has been beat up at the factory; just me.
