Thumb on ebay

What's up with the chickenhead volume knob? I think you could find a newer Thumb BO for less that has not had the bridge "filed" and has the newer just-a-nut. However, nothing looks fundamentally wrong with that bass and I do like the look of the neck.

The price difference between new and used Warwicks is so astoundingly large, I'm surprised they sell any new ones at all. $2,800 for a new Thumb BO5, or $1,000 and less for a used-but-mint one. NT's are even more shocking, $4,500 new, and they still sell used for only about $1,200 or so...

Yeah, its crazy. Especially here in Australia!

A new Thumb BO 5 will set you back up to $4000 Aud here (Probably more now that the currency is shot to bits). The mint one that I picked up in the classifieds cost me about $200 to ship. All up with currency conversions, it was about $1500 Aud for a near $4000 Thumb. Madness.

I like the Thumb for the price I got it at. If I had bought it new at the full price, Id be devastated. Sweet bass, but it ain't all that IMO!

Same here; I've got both a '96 NT4 and a '97 BO5. Both are great and I got them for decent prices. I think they sell for a fair price new considering the construction, European labor costs, etc., but they can't hold a resale value likely due to lack of interest in them. Whereas more popular basses like Stingrays tend to retain well over 2/3 of their value, Wickys sometimes go down to a 1/4 or less. They are definately basses you buy for playing, not investing!

Could you please cite the rule or where you believe this rule to be listed? I just checked the Rules/FAQ page and the closest thing I could find was:

All gear 'for-sale' and 'wanted' text must be limited to posts in the TalkBass Classifieds category. The Bass Guitar Classifieds are open to Supporting Members only. If you want to post your 'for sale' or 'wanted' text in your signature, a Supporting Membership is required.

Neither of these seem to be the case here. The poster does not appear to be posting a link to his own eBay sale in his post, sig, or profile. Also, he does not seem to be soliciting in a 'for-sale' or 'wanted' manner. He is simply asking advice from the TB community about a possible purchase. I hope I am not missing something, but I believe further clarification of your statement is needed.

I also thought the same thing, but I guess this falls under an appraisal?

From the Rules: Gear appraisal threads ("What's it worth?") should be posted in the Classifieds forum.

There is the catch. To create a thread in classifieds, you have to be a supporter. Your only other choice is to hi-jack someones thread and ask your appraisal question?

I guess... I always thought the intent of that rule was to prevent people from trying to advertise that they have something to sell under the pretense of a "What's it worth" question. I guess there is the spirit of the rule and then the ver batim rule. Since you were seeking the advice of the TB community and not referencing a piece of gear that you were selling I really can't see the problem. Then again a line has to be drawn somewhere I suppose. That being said my TB membership is in my opinion money well spent. :)

A wenge neck is not rare to see on a Warwick, especially one that was made before 1998 when it was pretty much standard on all models. And if it's a custom shop model then it should come with paperwork stating as much, which I'm guessing is not included.

You are right. A line does have to be drawn somewhere, but not here and not in such a blunt manner. I also believe the intention of those rules is to keep sales and advertisements in proper places and to provide a bit of a trust system through creating a committed community. Also, if those rules do appear to be violated it should be simply and respectfully stated by a member, supporting or non-supporting, what rule is being broken and, if feeling particularly helpful, possible resolutions(i.e. become a supporting member or rephrase the post to exclude any violating statements). To simply state, "you aren't allowed to ask that question" with no follow-up was not very helpful.
