Thumb rest ON THE Pickup for 70's P-Bass

If anyone has ever played a 70's P-bass they know the pickup is really uncomfortable to rest your thumb on because it has a protruding screw. I have an actual thumb rest on the bass, but for whatever reason my thumb always defaults to the pickup. I also like the tone better when played around that area.

What I am looking for is something to go over the screw on the pickup, so my thumb doesn't get stabbed by the protruding screw. Some new MM Stingrays have a really comfortable ramp type apparatus on the side of their pickups for super comfortable resting. Is there any product that is meant to attach on the side of a pickup, or any ideas for rigging something over the screw?
