Thumb Rest under strings by bridge?

Hey folks! I am new here. I saw this picture and have a question. What do you think the deal is with this? Just curious. Any ideas? This is Tim Bogert from Vanilla Fudge. This setup has puzzled me. Thumb rest under strings?

That’s a really good question. My guess is that he did it as a joke.

Edit: or he used it as a prop to wedge some foam under the strings for some muting??

Probably his version of a ramp for when he played near the bridge. See how he’s playing right over the pups? Probaly likes the feel of the pup under his fingers as he plucks and wanted the same feel at the bridge.

Yes. I believe Tim said something to that effect in an interview years ago.

Interesting. Doesn’t look like it protrudes enough for that.

I don’t know the timeline for Vanilla Fudge that well but, guessing from the picture, it was some time ago, probably before “real” ramps were invented. I’m sure Tim used what was available, possibly in a hotel room on the road, and would work.
