Thumb Rest

It is quite often made a piece plastic on Fender and similarly styled bass and wood on custom and modern styled basses it functions as an anchor point for you thumb whille playing finger style.
Originaly they were finger rests and placed below the strings, they were moved in the late 60s when finger style became more popular, I've attached a shot of my 65 Jazz with the finger rest.bassmasta55 said:

Thumb playing is something that I really enjoy when playing slower lines on a fretless. It gives the perfect warm, round tone.

indeed. i enjoy using the thumb a la classical guitar finger picking sometimes. it has such a warm, thick tone, though not a lot of speed, so it's not so great for certain styles and sounds.
and everyone knows, when it comes to bass, the thumb is all thump!
