Thunderbird Club

You will be surprised at how versatile they are. I played the 2015 strung with Sadowsky flats and the 2001 strung with DR Sunbeams last night. To a casual observer, they look identical, but they can sound completely different. The 2015 is set up with the pickups lowered a bit, and it can get a soft, open, round sound. Whatever that means. The 2001 is far more aggressive and is quite a bit louder, with the pickups right up under the strings. It's pure aggression. Both played through an Acoustic USA 360M, which has endless clean headroom. No overbaked Ampeg sound for this boy. Set up one way, a Bird can thump with the best of them. Set up another way, a Bird can melt faces.

You probably should think about ergonomics more than sound, since a Bird can be set up to sound all different kinds of ways. It won't hang like a 7ender. Close, if you really want it to, but mostly, it's going to be a bit more neutral, allow you to move it around a bit more, and it's going to be easier to play if you set it a bit lower and swung around onto your hip instead of directly in front of you.

So, now you know everything you need to know to fearlessly buy one sight unseen. If it doesn't work, blame me. I'll be ducking under the nearest big flat rock. :smug:
I'll pick up a Pro IV used to get me started. They appear to be great value. I'm not keen on active basses but a assume this will give me a good idea what I'm dealing with.

As far as ergos, yes. As far as sound, those are different from other Thunderbirds. I don't recall where the upper strap button is on those, but if it's not at the heel of the neck, you will probably want to move it there.

My PRO IV is a nice lump of wood but sounded like soggy weetabix. After modding it is no longer a PRO IV - new (passive) pups and wiring and very soon to be all chrome furniture.

The strap button is on the neck heel - I fitted D'Addario elliptical buttons but after the strap came away at the neck end I installed Schaller strap locks (Birds don't bounce).

The Classic Pro is a shorter route to where it sounds like you want to be. If you're up for an adventure, the parts you need to mod a PRO IV are readily available.

I didn't know the Classic IV Pro existed before I got mine either.

Between this, the Pro-IV (active) and the Gibson bird, I think the Classic IV is the clear winner. Gibson pups and identical construction.

not identical, it's a Different neck and the neck pup Position differs also. but I give it 85% Gibson at 40% of the Price... so bang bang bang for the buck

I dunno if I mentioned it before, but I'm a fan of Chuck Garric (bass Player in Alice Cooper Band, Geetard and Lead Singer of Beasto Blanco) and next to his heavily reliced Fenders he also Plays a burst bird

I can't tell any difference in the neck other than the walnut laminates are thinner in the Epiphone other than the neck seems identical. The headstock is slightly smaller and the pickups look to be placed the same, I haven't measured that though

Are you talking about the thickness of the laminates in the neck? Otherwise, that's the only structural difference (if you can even call it that) that I'm aware of. I'm pretty sure the pickups are in the same positions, though I haven't measured.

I had a 2009 Gibson and a sunburst classic pro side by side, the neck of the classic pro felt slimmer, the pickup positions are different and the Overall feel differs (maybe nitro vs poly?)

great bang for the buck whatsoever, some ppl might also like it better than the Gibson, but as always:
want a Gibson? buy a Gibson! want a good t-bird for a reasonable price? buy a classic pro!
