Don't worry about it. Really sorry to hear about your grandfather, but I just didn't have any advice in that area. My grandmother had Alzheimer's.I'm sorry. Now that I've effectively screwed up everyone's good time, can we please go back to the string discussion? Literally like 3 people responded to that.
I know, I was being a joker! Kind of. I have spent a LOT of money on basses (Modulus, Rickenbacker, Gibson, etc.) so I understand getting what you pay for. For my part, at this point in my life, a low end Epi Thunderbird just makes more sense. Would I LOVE to have a 1964 Gibson Thunderbird IV?? YES!!! But at $8000 to $10000, I really can't justify it, as I know from experience, playing it in my music room through a small 25 watt amp, it would not sound all THAT different. But if I could afford it I would do it! Ten years ago I MAY have spent $4000 to $5000 on a Lull Bird. But not now. Hats off to those who can and do!The EVP is a great bass, and a great value for the price, but is in no way equivalent to a Lull in any category. The Lull is worth every cent of $4000...but 4 grand is A LOT of money that I don't have, so I'll be saving for an EVP.

I understand. I got enough responses to know what to do. I'm gonna play it, but treat it like it's a $10,000 Fodera with a crazy-expensive finish.Don't worry about it. Really sorry to hear about your grandfather, but I just didn't have any advice in that area. My grandmother had Alzheimer's.
Sounds great. Sentimental value is huge.I understand. I got enough responses to know what to do. I'm gonna play it, but treat it like it's a $10,000 Fodera with a crazy-expensive finish.
Hey... I know a thing or two about being the rain on the parade, and this wasn't even a sprinkleI'm sorry. Now that I've effectively screwed up everyone's good time, can we please go back to the string discussion? Literally like 3 people responded to that.
He’s been making T Bird pickups for years for someone else, with their label on em. He wants to market his own now. I’m looking forward to trying them![]()
Thank you so much for this. I'm extremely socially awkward and always had a hard time making friends. I guess that's why all my college courses are online and I rarely leave the house. I think the term is "keyboard warrior"?Hey... I know a thing or two about being the rain on the parade, and this wasn't even a sprinkle
I personally derive pleasure and satisfaction out of helping a friend through a tough time, and the fact that you felt comfortable enough to ask us here, is probably sufficient evidence of friendship![]()
What would he want you to do? I say play it in his honor. But that is up to you. Keeping it in the case may be the thing to do for a while.I'm gonna ask a question and hope it's in the parameters of the club because, honestly, this is the only part of TalkBass I feel comfortable. I own 3 basses. Of course my Thunderbird, an MIM Jazz Bass strung with flats, and a Squier P-Bass. I don't play the Squier because it was given a long time ago to me by my Grandfather who now had dementia. I've always been careful with it so it's still in nice condition, but my situation is whether I should go ahead an retire it to the case so nothing ever happens to it or if I should play it. My problem is because he gave it to me to play after I sold my only bass some years ago and he was in good health then. Things are very different now. What do you think?
Yep. What he said! Also make sure your friend makes pickups that fit in Epiphone Thunderbirds!Happy to be a "beta tester"......just sayin'![]()

It what way is it fortunate that he won't listen to you! That is unfortunate! UNFORTUNATE! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!Fortunately, my friend is one of the most respected pickup designers on the planet, so I can mention things, but he’s gonna do what he’s gonna do![]()

It's unpredictable how a left-handed Thunderbird will respond to them, so he'd better send some over to me, too.Fortunate, in the sense that he’s a pal and I can just shoot him a text, or get proto pickups to try![]()
