It may be sooner than you think friend. California is a beautiful state with plenty to see and do. Being born here and spending a good deal of my formative years in SoCal and NorCal I considered it my home and decided to retire here. What I didn't take into account is how much it's changed in the last 30 years. Right now I have as many reasons to stay as I do to leave. The near future will be the tipping point one way or the other in my long term decision.

See, it's not just a one trick pony, it can even double as wardrobe.

If you get a chance give La Bella Black tapes a try. A completely different feeling and sound, but one you get used to very quickly and has some serious tonal advantages in some genres. Maybe best suited for a back up bass that you can call on for specific songs.

Jazz neck Solo isn't a bad sound to my ears - it's detailed and rich, a sound I can use and not feel like I'm being slighted. However, still I prefer the bolder thicker sound of a neck Humbucker.

With only one exception (Warwick Thumb bass) I absolutely positively completely and utterly detest the sound of a Jazz bridge pup (soloed or paired with the neck). It's the main reason I can't listen to 5 seconds of Jaco. All I hear is nasal bark, honk, rasp and burp. It's even higher up on my tones to avoid list than excessive slapping. I know some people like that burpy, raspy, barky sound but to me it's the musical bass equivalent to a kazoo.

I currently have at least 10 basses with Jazz/Jazz or Jazz/Precision or Jazz/Humbucker pup layouts, so its not like I tried one in a store once and didn't like it. No, it's much more the case of buying and buying and buying different Jazz configurations to hopefully find one I like. And I did find one, it's a Warwick Thumb Bolt on Five string and sounds utterly awesome with both pups full on - an absolute buzzsaw type sound, but it's a very unique pup layout and a sound that doesn't necessarily go well with a lot of the music I play.

Honestly, it took this club and the purchase of a Gibson SG Supreme bass and multiple subsequent purchases of various thunderbird type basses to help me realize I'm just a Humbucker kind of guy.

LOL - Back-ups are kinda like instruction manuals - real men don't need em! :D
Actually I had all the photos backed up on a memory stick. The problem is, I can't remember where I put the memory stick. :rollno::bored::banghead::crying::thumbsdown::sour::mad::(
didn't know they made a bolt on Thumb...

As an original member of the Princess Fingers Bass Players Club, I approve this message.

Do not ever buy Jonas Hellborg Signature strings from DR! They are so coarse, I love them but you'd best have some very well developed callouses on both hands - I love their tone so it's worth it to me.

It's strange. So many complain about RS66, but I have no problem with them. I have well developed callouses as (perhaps in part as a result), but the cobalt flats are a sore point for me (pun intended).

How do those feel and sound compared to the likes of SIT Power Steel or Ken Smith Rock Master?

Not a criticism of Flats or those that like them, but one reason I don't play them is the tactile feel, I have pretty hefty callouses and that smooth surface just doesn't seem right. The recently acquired Studio Bird had some flats on it, the tone was very plunky, Ken's fave SITs set that bass on fire tonally.

Interesting and good to know. I have almost bought a set of those a couple of times. I've heard that EB Cobalt Rounds are crazy rough, but never played them either.
