Thunderbird Club

Epiphone has been stingy about colors for a decade. From about ‘07 to ‘10, they put out some beautifully finished Thunderbird IVs in white, Pelham Blue, TV Silver, Silverburst, black and red. They called them Limited Edition Custom Shop Thunderbirds. I believe that stopped around the time the production of the bolt ons switched from Korea to China.

You’re right of course. They should resurrect the program. But don’t hold your breath.

Not sure when the Custom Shop 'birds ended, but if the serial numbers are to be believed, my Custom Shop "Redbird" is an '06, made in Korea (Saein).
My '08 Blackbird was made in China (DaeWon); the '07 burst I used to have was, apparently, one of the early production Chinese models (Unsung).

I kind of wonder if, at least some of?, the Custom Shop Thunderbirds were a bit of Epiphone clearing out the last of the Korean parts, as they shifted production to China?

No, not mine, but why can't Epiphone do what this guy did?

Gibson made a 'bright cherry' finished T-Bird in 2018.

I love the looks of these, but never liked (as in at all), a PU located at the end of the neck.

I had one years ago, those humbuckers actually were a little more open than a Gibson Mudbucker but those basses should have also had a mid pickup. Fender made a huge mistake when they eliminated the original single coil pickups for those IMHO.

It was the same sound as an EB-O. Mud. But that was what bass players wanted then - more about feeling bass than hearing delineation. (18" drivers also) Kind of like double-bass players in jazz - the bass moves underneath the soloists and blends with the kick drum - and bass solo's were barely audible, which became the butt of jokes unless you were a bass-player.

Many players modded theirs with a 2nd pu, but many players added that pu under the neck on P-basses.

Kenny Gradney had a wisely modded Telecaster as he had another humbucker located at the Stingray or Ric bridge pickup position, not too close too the bridge. Sounds great on this clip (the bass kicks in after a minute):

He probably uses the bridge pickup only but with those not-too-far-apart pickup locations I'm sure the blended sound is good too.

I traded my Tele for a used late 60's CAR P bass with an early 70's fretless rosewood neck on it in 1977 and the owner had a humbucker right against the neck. He asked for it back though and I gave to to him. Not sure if it was a Fender or an EB-0 pickup.

Yes, that thing sounds good. They were pretty good pickups, I have some cassettes from 1976-77 of my band with my Tele bass through an SVT with Rotos on it and it actually sounded fairly good considering.

Yes, that thing sounds good.

The band ain't bad either...:D

Damn, I shot myself in the foot again. I thought I was G.A.S. free but apart from that ESP Bass IV that J.I.O. posted a while ago I want a Kenny Gradney -style two humbucker Tele.
Better take a walk in the snow to cool a bit.

Actually took one today. Want some snow? Got plenty around here:

Pat Vega did something similar with single coils..
