Thunderfunk Amp club!

Jome,
I'm glad to see you back on the Thunderfunk wagon! The 550 I got from you has been gigging ever since I bought it. I use the 550 for all rehearsals and use the 750 for the shows. I still take the 550 for my spare. Great head, hasn't missed a beat!

One of these days, I'm gonna send my heads to Dave to get them upgraded. The problem is, they are doing such a great job, it's hard to justify right now.

Glad to hear that you're still digging the TFunk. I sure hated selling it and the Berg cabinet but I'll have to say that the Roscoe 3006 lived up to my expectations
It sure was a bit hard finding another nice clean 550-B though. Not as many for sale these days (although I've seen a couple of the last few weeks).

I'm set for basses and amp/cabinets now though so all's well that ends well!

At one time the amp did 900 watts according to this link.. But i see that has been recalculated

Yeah that would have been with a two ohm load.

I only run my 750 at a 4 ohm minimum. I get a ton of chest thumping tone from the 750 and a pair of GS112s. A few times I have ran through a Radial BigShot ABY into both heads pushing three Aguilar cabs. That is insane!

Last time I spoke with Dave, he said it would be no problem running my head (750) at a two ohm load. He just did a little "beefing up" of the circuits and head sinks on the 800 version.

Just hang onto this one! :)

I let my dad have that Berg cab. He was crazy about it. Plus the light weight was easier for him to handle. He got my SVT 3 Pro to go with it. He is a happy senior citizen!

Just wanted to drop in the TFunk club and say that I am one happy camper. I recently got a used TF550B in the TB classifieds. Love it! What a great amp.

I am a former AMP user, and then went on a long and expensive journey that took me through many many tube amps as well as many many class D amps. Love tube amps in all their flavors, but always wanted to have a SS as a back up, or when I wanted a lighter load. Tried lots of Class Ds to fill this role, but never found one I loved. Decided to try TFunk based on my love of my old AMP.

The TFunk is truly a beautiful amp. It just sounds so good. Just plug in and play. It's one of those "sounds you hear in your head" kind of amps. All of the EQ is just gravy! I have yet to hear a bad tone out of this amp.

I have been using it with my Baer ML112 on a number of "small" gigs, and will take it out on the road with the full on rock band this weekend with my DB212. I know it will shine.

Now just trying to decide on a live in rack case vs just a case. Not really a fan of the molded plastic racks, so that limits me a bit. Any recommendations are appreciated.

In the "just a case" category, I have a Mooradian amp bag that works perfectly for my TFB800-B2. I also have Dave's light-weight padded flight case for even more protection. These are made-to-order from Cabbage Cases.

The amp also fits perfectly in the Gator shallow 2-space rack, with no wasted space. (Yes it's plastic, but it provides great protection.)

All great choices!

The Cabbage case from Dave is FANTASTIC. Very good protection, still small and lightweight, with room for cables under the amp (which is suspended by padding, almost like a 'shock mount' case for a tube amp). Highly recommended for these heads. A bit spendy, but so is the amp. Worth it IMO!

Edit: It is also such a beautiful looking piece of gear that it is kind of nice to use it 'without a rack' on the top of your cab. Add the fact that it uses the chassis as a 'cooling heat sink', the Cabbage case is a great option for protection when schlepping, and also 'optimal performance' on the gig (both looks and cool operation!).

THIS.
The Cabbage case is the way to transport the TFunk, and the amp itslef is a looker on top of say...MY Berg HS410:D

I am too often tempted to gig out with my GK MB Fusion, seeing as I can put it in my shirt pocket!
But the "cumbersome" lead-sled configuration of my 750A makes me forget just how GOOD Dave Funk builds.

Worth the weight in gold.

I've been thinking about the Cabbage case option. My TF550A gets quite warm and I'm hesitant about racking it.

Anyone tried and NOT like the Cabbage case?

I certainly like the Cabbage Case, but my well-padded Mooradian amp bag provides good protection against normal bumps and bruises for much less money. I use it all the time for light duty transportation. The Cabbage Case is for "ultimate protection," when others are helping me transport my gear. My TFB continues to look "brand-new."

The Mooradian bags are great also. I use them with my Markbass micro heads, and for over a decade with my Walter Woods amps. Can't quite imagine a TF750a or 800b in a soft bag at their size and weight, but if it works, it works! VERY high quality stuff, and a great, honest company. +1

Another thing to consider: the rack ears can be mounted in two positions -- either flush with the front panel or so the front panel is recessed. The second method greatly improves ventilation with an SKB or Gator-type case.

I gigged my 750A heavily in a standard protec bag and after moving on to the DB750 I moved my 550A into the same bag. Most gigs were without FOH - never had a lick of trouble with either amp over-heating.
BTW my most common rig with the 750A was into 3 and up to 4 GS112's, yeah it got warm, but never super hot.

Just wanted to report back on my Friday gig with my new (to me) Tfunk 550B... AWESOME.

I used the TFunk with my DB212 cab and passive jazz, and it sounded great. Had the gain up around 5 with the limiter in. Saw the light come on a handful of times. Enhance on about 2 or 3, and just one click boost at about 600hz. I was pretty much the only thing on stage not going FOH, and felt just fine about it.

After doing several gigs at low volume, I was surprised how much the low end tightened up when pushing the amp (in a nice way). The mid character really came out and the amp just sounded fat, smooth, round, even, clear, full, etc, etc.

Most defiantly need to get the case thing worked out. Considering the amp gets handled by others, and is in a trailer when on the road, the Cabbage Case is looking pretty good at this point, and is sure getting good reviews here.

During the gig, me and the drummer both got a wiff of what smelled like super glue or some kind of electrical thing right in the area of the bass rig. Was it the Funk? The amp did not miss a beat, but it had me a little worried. Might open it up and take a look... see if I can spot any wire shielding that looks melted or someting.

I have been racking both the 550b and 750A with no....never.... a problem in any way what so ever. I have played tube amps which get hotter than that. I have played the 750A at 2 ohms and never had a problem. Get a rack. its cheaper than the case and it will protect it when its on a Cab. If you are concerned get a 3 space rack so you have more ventilation. Dave uses the best quality components and nothing relating to heat will hurt it as Dave said many many times.

Anyone done the upgrade to the current PA board?

I've got a 420 that I'm considering sending home to Dave for upgrade to the current PA, preamp refresh, recap and current transformer. Basically, turn the old girl into a 600.

Several reasons why; the caps are ten years old and I want some more whump on the lower registers. The 420 is the only amp I own - and I gig regularly.

Am I barking up the wrong tree?
