THUNDERFUNK...three questions

first question: has anybody heard from Mr. Funk recently? i emailed him last week thursday to get some info about his current amp line up. didn't hear back from him, followed up a week later (yesterday) and the email bounced.

second question: i keep reading all these different TB posts about how he has a new(er?) amp model available after the 550. some say it's the 750, other the 800. either way, it is not on his website anywhere. can anybody confirm what the new model specs are (wattage, ohms, price) and if it is currently available, and what the wait time is to get one?

third question: i am currently trying to upgrade from a SVT4. i play a Dingwall ABII (18V pickups + Aggie OBP1 preamp) through a bunch of effects, and play everything from dub, jazz, funk, and metal to super technical squarepusher/wooten style intricate up tempo slap stuff.
the one amp that i tried so far that i really like was the EBS TD650, which blew my socks off when i ran my ABII through it at bass NW. but it is quite spendy at almost 2 grand (tax included). nothing against the swedes (i am over half swede myself) but i would rather spend that money on something american made of equal quality. but nobody in seattle carries thunderfunk amps so i can not try one out for myself.

third question is how does TF (any model) stack up against the EBS TD650 or the SVT4 (yes, i know it's better than that, but how)? bonus points for any other dingers out there that have experience with these amps!!!

TFB750: 750 into 4ohms, 800 into 2ohms. Price is around $1600 (I think)

Don't know how they would compare. There are a couple of threads here about the TFB750 though. I have a TFB550 and I love it especially in a band setting. Seems to sit nicely (and easily) in the mix with the band.

I traded email with Dave recently myself and yes, he sounds very busy. He also seemed to have two different emails listed on the website, so might want to try both. It is the TFB750A and Dave quoted me $1795.

I don't have experience with the EBS - limited with the Ampeg. I have the older TFB420 and love it. The tone is warm, punchy with tight lows and clear highs. It is more focused - doesn't seem to have the wide lows or bright highs and I think is better suited for use with "wider" sounding cabinets. This is especially so if you crank the amp, since it seems to compress the tone a bit. My understanding is that with increased headroom, the 750 has much bigger lows with more openness and more girth. Tfunk makes the most musical out of the box amp I've ever heard, so this is taking a great amp another step forward. All IME, of course.

PS, I find the Ampeg to be bloated sounding with less definition and a bit overrated in terms of power by comparison...

I called Dave Funk on his company line on Friday night before NAMM this January & he called me at 8:30am the next morning. I played the 750 at the show in the Cort booth through an Accugroove Tri 112 & it was spectacular. It had an amazing punch with great depth and clarity. Mr. Funk probably got quite a few orders from the show - I know it's add that the amp is not pictured on his site - I think that visually it is identical to the 550. KJUNG has experience with TF & EBS heads if you want to send him a PM.

I received an email reply from him a couple of days ago.

Here is a shot of the front and back of the TFB750-A. It truly is an amazing amp. The quality will blow you away before you even turn it on!

I saw dave a few weeks ago.. I know he is very busy making amps.. try this email address. He also sent me an email on monday..
The Tfunk is a very musical sounding amp.. its magical...

Maybe just call him.

I was in your shoes last year...
It started by picking up the phone and calling Dave.
I simply told him my music situation and what I was looking for in an amp and he took the time to walk me through it...

That day, over the phone, I bought a TFB550B - he's in Illinois, I'm in Los Angeles...I never played the amp before either.

Naturally, I was concerned, but he remided me if you like it after 7 days, you can keep it, if not, you have a week to send it back. I never sent it back!

It took about an hour of playing through it before I realized that this is the best amp I've ever owned...all things considered. I played and played and played and could not squeeze a bad tone out of it...(you could if you really try), so I kept it and am really happy.

He makes great amps. Call him.

ya'll rock!!! thanks for the info. looks like i will be dropping about 2 grand either way, might as well have it stay in the US.
time to start saving up...anybody want to buy an SVT 4, PRO410HLF cab, SWR basic 350 (pre fender), or an ashdown 210 and 112 in seattle? 2 grand takes all...LOL. if you are reading this you probably either already have a TF or are gassing for one like me.

I bought my first Thunderfunk through Bass NW. They had to order it in, though. For some reason, they don't keep one on the floor. When I was ready for a 550, I called Dave and just had a great time 'talkin' bass'. I'm sure he'd be glad to take your call, talk bass, and sell you an amp.:D

I met Dave Funk on 2/1/08 (along with Jauqo), and had the chance to play the 750.

I've never heard a sound like that before in my life, and I've played through some pretty nice amps (Trace Elliot, Orange, Old School Ampeg...) but the clarity, punch and OOMPH that I got (and I play hip-hop) was unsurpassed.

The band was swarming around the amp as if it radiated money. It sounds that good.

Dave is good people, makes great amps, and if you decide to drop 2T on an amp, you will NOT be disappointed by the 750.

On an aside, I'm playing through a 550 right now, and once I get a proper cab to couple it with, I'll be able to go into more detail.

I hung out with Dave last Friday at a Trace Adkins show, where Keith Horne's band (Luke Bryan) was opening. He had the 750 with him and was letting Keith borrow it for the night. Like everyone else here is saying, he's just fine, but super busy trying to keep up with all the initial 750A orders.

Hi Guys,

Robbie from RIM Custom Basses in the UK here, I spoke to Dave the other night for over 1 1/2 hours, he's a great guy and he was telling me all about Namm and that he's very busy with TFB750-A orders. I have two on their way soon, might even upgrade from the 550 myself. If you want pure musical bass tone then Thunderfunk is the amp!
