To Finally Gig an SVT

I've loved them 30 years back, but there are so many way to get there today. Glad you got to experience it!

Briefly: Was in some semi-successful local band in the seventies but I could not afford an SVT/810 rig. I have admired them, greatly, all this time. Left music for thirty years, then returned several years ago. Pre-Covid, found a low-miles very early MTI SVT with the "Magnavox" circuitry an all-vintage preamp tube including the 12DW7s, and Svetlana Winged-C 6550s. Later I added an 810e cab. I have never gigged this rig. My Mesa WD-800 and Berg 212 have made more sense. Until now....

I'm very excited to play an outdoor show Thursday. Very. I play a P-Bass with Pure Vintage '63 pickups. I do not expect to have tone problems.

Your P-Bass with that PV '63 pickup will go with your SVT rig like bread & buttah. Careful schlepping that bad boy.

The last time I gigged an SVT (VR) / SVT212, I could barely go beyond 2 or 3, in the little club we were playing.
Sounded great though.
I got my V4B shortly thereafter...

Good luck with the SVT/810 rig. But I’d say your WD800/Berg 212 rig will still be plenty relevant.

I’ve used SVT/810 rigs in back lines for decades. Never made me want one and I’d never trade my own WD800/Berg 212 rig for one either.

Be careful if you’re getting into the heavy iron from the golden age of rock or you’ll soon be wanting to try an Acoustic 360/361 dual stack next! Totally different vibe from an SVT. But an equally mind altering experience. Especially if you’re putting a JB through it.

Gotta love some of those old warhorses if you’re a bass player. At least in IMO.

When I had roadies I used an SVT. Now that I haul my own gear I use a PF-800 and PF-115.

I agree!!! I live and play in Florida, so shorts not that taboo as other places....but I rock shorts a lot of times.

Love that feeling of having an SVT / Fridge behind me! Nothing beats it.

If I remember right, the head is 85lbs and the cab is 110lbs. Since I hit 60, gravity gets stronger every year I get older. I'm sticking with my Mesa 800+ and 1-15, although an Ampeg Scrambler is pretty tempting. I don't know where you are playing, but I will be listening for a growling Ampeg tonight somewhere off in the distance. Post pictures with your report!
