Told my band I was thinking about "retiring!"

We got where we barely communicate, never practice, nobody is out hunting gigs. I sub more than I play with my own freakin' band. I sent an email letting everyone I had been considering giving up playing in a band and selling my PA stuff.

I immediately got responses and calls saying things like "I thought you were the one dude that WANTED to play!" Well, I do/did! I go through "getting excited" periodically and everyone talks a good game about learning stuff, etc. but it doesn't happen. I didn't send the message to pressure anyone, but it seems it has given them a wakeup call. I'm still thinking about pairing everything down. I have a "wait and see" attitude about getting things going again.

Before you sell all your stuff, I suggest "retiring" from playing out and then see how it goes for a few months.

When the pressure is off, just chill for awhile and think about making a decision later on.

I've read too many threads where people sell all their stuff and regret it a few months later.

If its on hold and your still giging with others maybe just keep that going for awhile. It sounds like you want to play and the other band members are time wasters. You can cut that tie if it wouldnt be a big hassle or keep dragging them along.

Keep the PA and rent it out. If you change your mind down the road you still have a PA.

I left a band the same way. They were slugs, I was subbing way more than the band was playing.
Ended up with a decent band that wants to play.

The sad thing is you can charge more to show up with a PA than you can to show up with a PA and a band.

Hell, it’s been quite a while, but I’d take out my small SOS PA with karaoke for a backyard party and make 2/3 times what I make with the band.

I know a couple sound guys who do this on the side, and one who does nothing else.

One of the cover Bands I was in got like this.
If the gigs a there, it will work out.
Once it gets stale, band will go down hill fast.
Find another Band.

i know that feeling man,similar story with my old band.it was, after a while, the only one booking practices, gigs and sorting the rest of the stuff out.it turned into work when i was in for enjoyment and i was the lackey so i folded the group and said to converge in a few years time....never happened though,what's that tell you?
