Tone Comparison

As much as I love Jazz Bass tone, most of the fives I have owned were humbucker equipped basses. My two favorite humbucker tones are the “modern” with two humbucker near the bridge and the single H stingray tone. I want to know which sounds best with me playing.

That StingRay !!!! The slap is what my ears like to hear. The Peavey doesn’t sound bad. They both sound good. But that signature StingRay bounce to the notes is what my ears want to hear.

I love both tones, but I need to raise action give a bit of relief to my Peavey neck because I was having to be extra careful to minimize fret buzz when I was playing finger style. The Ray’s action was a touch high, but the tone came through loud and clear. EBMM did a great job voicing the Special’s preamp because it is super versatile.

The more I listen, the more the fret buzz on my Peavey annoys me. The Ray sounds both ways. I need get rid of the buzz and compare them again

I dig 'em both, and that second newer video of the Peavey does sound better. It hard to tell since I doubt both basses have same strings with same amount of playing time.

My Peavey bit the dust at church today. After 26 or 28 years, the preamp burned out. This bass has active pickups to, so don’t how much I can salvage on this very rare bass.
