Tone Problems, Need Help

With all this new info, I can't wait to get home and do some testing. Should I listen through headphones when I'm fiddling with tone? I do play in a garage. If that makes a difference.
Nah, I wouldn't do headphones or worry about being in a garage. It can sound great in the headphones and sound bad in the amp and vice versa, so concentrate on getting a good amp tone.

Could someone explain exactly what each knob does on my T-Bird? There is four. I can hear the difference they make but don't know what to call it.

The Epi T-Bird Pro has Master Volume, Blend (lets you decide if you want balanced output or more or less volume from one pickup or the other), High-EQ, and Low-EQ. It is an active electronics bass, hot pickups. It is very modern, trebly, and growly. I own one of these, and I love it.

It can be tamed. Roll off that High EQ on the bass, and set your amp EQ flat. Take it from there.
