Toneport UX1 and Gearbox question...

I'm new to recording, but wanted to start soon.

In the Gearbox software that comes with the UX1, how much variety is there in bass tones? Are they any good? The sound I'm looking for is basically that modern Geddy Lee-ish sound, that punch and growl with a bit of distortion that cuts through the mix well. I was thinking of buying the package to record guitar/bass, (primarily bass), but I'm not sure if it's worth it or not.

I had the UX2, and it really failed as far as bass tones. Inever got the bass expansion, because I didn't like the demos.

But the Toneport interfaces are great products nonetheless. They have a good direct tone and are quiet. Better than some more expensive units in these areas.

IMO, get the Toneport and get Revalver MKII, it smokes! Great dirtyish, grindy bass tones. Awesome guitar tones as well. I've used literally every amp sim (Gearbox, Guitar Rig2, Amplitube2, Ampeg SVX, etc) out there, and this stands above the rest IMO.

The hardware is great but the simulation sucks ass...I'll look at revalver II.

I'm not crazy about the stock Gearbox bass sounds but I do like the flexibility. For bass I almost always use one of the preamps designed for vocals, those sounds great for bass. There is an overall artificial sound when you play an instrument individually but in the mix they sound good. I exclusively use the Toneport audio outs into my mixer and that thickens them up even more.

Hmm... now I'm not sure. I'm only 17 and new to recording, but I want it to be good quality wise with quality tones. I was drawn to the UX1 because it seemed to have the full package and it's not very expensive...

I also soonish want a Sansamp Bass DI...probably after Christmas, but then I have no good guitar tones... and I'm not rich, remember, student applying for colleges!

Dilemma indeed!

I've used a M-Audio black box, a rack mounted bass pod and I think the Toneport overall sounds superior

I agree. I sold my UX2 and bought an Mbox. The Toneport sounded better, especially for tracking direct bass.

When my drummer asked me what he should get, I pointed him to a Toneport GX. He's pretty happy with it, and considering he paid $70 for it, it's a smokin' deal.

Still don't like the Gearbox sims though. I'm stuck on Revalver MKII,and I'm startled at the way it sits in the mix.
