Top 10 List - Habits of Highly Effective Full-Time Luthiers

Well said!! I have a friend (a luthier) who builds guitars for blue grass players pretty much strictly. Although he presently doesn't take orders and his back log is out nearly 5 years on the wait list, he's down to earth enough to say he builds "tools" for musicians. Plain and simple. His customers want and get consistent performance and quality from their "tools", but he'll "decorate" a guitar if you want.

Well they have to function first and foremost! The rest is dressing.

But pretty wood is a good thing too... :)

I like my tools...

i plan on making a hollow body instrument (probably guitar) with all my scraps. glue them up in the shape of the outline of a guitar, and then thickness them and add a top and bottom. should look interesting with the middle having odd types of woods. think i'll try to make it as mismatched as possible.

edit: i'll make sure to use the pieces so that the grain is all aligned somewhat parallel with the neck
