Anybody catch the latest BGM(UK as far as I know.)

It had the expected(and deserved, IMHO) Jaco in the No. 1 Slot. With MacCartney in No. 2 and Flea in No. 3.
It said that when asking people they allowed for players that they love and not who is considered better. For example, Jaco may be considered a better player than say, Tim Commerford, but one might be influenced by Commerford far more...

I was just interested to see what people's opinions who saw the list was and what list everybody would make if it was up to them.

I think a lot of people feel obligated to at least mention him because of his influence, even though they might prefer others.

Strangely, I find that my influences are often not bass players. If the music speaks to me, it doesn't really matter what instrument they play (if any).

Here are some bassists that inspire me (no real order):

Geddy I was hooked the first time I heard 'Tom Sawyer.' I was so stoked to learn that so many other bassists love him, too. :cool:

Geezer Butler Those pentatonic lines can groove.

Jamerson Groove comes first. Period. Studying this guy lately, along with some of the blues greats, has really opened my eyes.

Tim Commerford His tone, presence, and impact are all very strong. Amazing chops be damned, this guy's bass is exactly where it needs to be in the music.

Stuart Hamm His experimentation with technique is inspiring, but what impresses me is that this guy can shred, yet is perfectly happy to lay back and groove. When it's time to solo, he's part tasteful and part entertainer; it's nice to see a man who doesn't take himself too seriously.

Dave LaRue Like Stu Hamm, he backs some of the best solo guitarists in rock music and he knows when it's appropriate to use his bag of tricks and when it isn't.

Christopher Squire I was raised on Yes. Even in a large band, Squire is able to write bass lines that are not only functional, but absolutely essential to the song.

There are lots of others (Roger Waters, Jack Bruce, Bob Daisley, etc.), but these are the guys that are making a big difference in my development right now.

The thread is about your top 20 bass players not influences, who is the fastest etc so I would have to say that I am my favourite bass player.

I'm not big headed, I'm not in a famous band and I've never released a CD but I get great satisfaction and happiness playing and no other bass player can play exactly like me.

Nothing to do with speed, dexterity or chops - I play the way I do after 20 years of playing what I want to just like eveyone here is different to each other unless you purposely went all out to emulate your favourite bass player at the time.

I mean, I enjoy listening to Billy Sheehan who IMO is very talented and doesn't seem big headed but I can get tired after listening to his first squillion notes.

Okay then - Larry Graham it is

I don't think he's still in the band but he was a large part in putting Jamiroquai on the map. Definitely in my top 20. His tone is to die for.
