What is "dark country?"

Take Banks of the Ohio and transpose it through the generations. I wanna say country with Nick Cave sensibilities but it's always been there. Kind of a default Indie take on the genre. Long Black Veil and Lay With Me in a Field of Stone also predate banjo punk.

Yeah, "dark country" is very much alt-country or indie-flavored country... the Handsome Family would be a good example that's more recent. But we also play Lana Del Rey and Morphine and the aforementioned Alex Argot, so it's a very loose term, probably even looser in our case. But miles away from top 40, except for maybe Lana.
