Total Cell Phone Ban While Driving?

There sure are a lot of people here who do not know how research and data works......

There are also a lot of people who does not understand how our government works either. God help us at election time :bawl:

You ask the government to ban things you disagree with. This gives something called legal precedent.

Legal precedent - Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

By giving one court authority to ban something you are giving a court the right to ban something else you may not agree with. By the same logic put forth in this very thread if this ban goes through the courts could ban passengers, kids, radios, and even pretty girls walking down the street " for our own safety" due to legal precedent set forth. You pro-ban folks are slitting your own throats and don't even know it.

It brings to mind this very relevant quote from a Pastor in Nazi Germany who fully welcomed the Nazi party into power. He did not like homosexuals or Jews so he remained passive and even sort of supported the persicution. Then they locked him up for his Christian beliefs and fighting the "Nazification" of German Protestant Churches.

When they came for the Jews, I did nothing, for I am not a Jew. When they came for the Socialists, I did nothing, for I am not a Socialist. When they came for the labor leaders, the homosexuals, the gypsies, I did nothing, for I am none of these, and when they came for me, I was alone, there was no one to stand up for me. -- Martin Niemoller, a Lutheran pastor from Nazi Germany
Come on, really? Guess we'd better repeal speed limits, DUI laws and seat belt laws lest they ban pretty girls walking down the street.

So, your'e saying when the teenager that's texting on his phone runs over your child, no one will come to help you help you because you and your anti-ban folks did nothing to stop it?

Niiiice work, well played. At least the people behind the ban are are "trying to stop the Nazi's" ... What are you doing?

I do not think you read what you thought you read. The Nazi's were the banners, they banned everything and everyone from homosexuals to Paul Hindemith because Hitler thought his music was "unpatriotic"

So far the only argument fro the ban i have heard is fear mongering. "So, your'e saying when the teenager that's texting on his phone runs over your child, no one will come to help you help you because you and your anti-ban folks did nothing to stop it? "

How about some or ANY statistical data that shows the ban on cel phones while driving has done anything to reduce accidents. Not your little "what if" scenarios but an actual study, done by researchers, I linked to a few that show the ban to do nothing to reduce accidents.

So how about some DATA people, show me a study showing that banning phone use while driving has had any positive effect at all.

Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?

And lets stop melding texting and using a hands free headset as the same issue, I do not think most people here will defend texting while driving. They are 2 different actions and 2 different issues.

But he loved Wagner!

I do think that texting while driving is much more dangerous then talking on the phone while driving. When I text it requires a lot more attention to the texting process than it does for me to have a conversation, so I never text behind the wheel. They didnt even need to pass a law for me to realize that it was extremely unsafe.

Germany has no speed limits and the drinking age is 16, and they have less accidents per capita than the US.... next attempt please.......

Did it really take 15 pages before a Nazi reference was made? Or did I miss one earlier?

Still guys, thats progress!

Lol banning was the Nazi's success story...........sorry it just related to the quote.

You can't compare two countries with different geography and cultures, and I said nothing about the drinking age. There's loads of data demonstrating that speed limits and DUI laws have brought down accidents and driving fatalities in the US, feel free to look it up.

ETA: Here's some data. And Germany does indeed have speed limits on many roads, even parts of the Autobahn. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limit

Wasn't that a Seinfeld episode? :p

That one is called "The Caddy"

Kramer befriends a caddy, who helps him improve his golf game and offers him other advice. George leaves his car at work, and Mr. Wilhelm and George Steinbrenner think he's been working extra hard. Elaine encounters Sue Ellen Mischke (Brenda Strong), an old high-school friend who is now an heiress to the Oh Henry! candy bar fortune and a "braless wonder". After Elaine gives Sue Ellen a bra as gift, Sue Ellen starts wearing only a bra without a top. Having to take George's car to a car wash, Kramer and Jerry get into an accident with it when Kramer is distracted by bra-clad Sue Ellen. Finding the car in this state, with blood from the accident, all of George's coworkers think that George got into a bad accident. Mr. Wilhelm tells Steinbrenner, and they begin an immediate search for George. They can't find him and declare him dead. When George later returns to work (faking injuries after being told by Jerry what had happened), he finds out he didn't get the position of assistant manager. Kramer and Elaine take her rival Sue Ellen to court for damages after the accident, and only Jerry may stand in the way. At the trial, the caddy tells Kramer to get Sue Ellen to try on the bra. She tries, but the bra doesn't fit, costing Kramer the trial.

Germany does have speed limits, even on the Autobahn. They also have much more rigorous driver education programs, more stringent requirements for licensure, and a higher minimum driving age.

You can dismiss the "What if" if you want...
I still want to know how you are gonna feel when it happens to someone you know, knowing you opposed the ban that could have saved ONE life.
Or is someone else's life less important than than your need to drive distracted?

And BTW there IS a difference between having the authority to to something and having the Right to do something.

Germany has no speed limits and the drinking age is 16, and they have less accidents per capita than the US.... next attempt please.......

They also have drivers who mostly know that driving is not a frivolous, solipsistic background task.

But that keeps going back to a point that's been made over and over. There are places that already have this ban (or something similar), and despite these bans there have been little to no reduction in automotive accidents. If this is the case time and time again then what is gained by implementing some sort of federal ban that will just as likely do nothing?
