Howdy - just getting into learning the bass, always been a huge fan of bass driven music such as Yes and Pink Floyd. Slowly teaching myself through youtube videos and thankfully have some very talented musician neighbors. I've been working on the intro to "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" so far.

Welcome and good luck. Sounds like you are a note for note person.
I did not go that way, instead I follow the chords and play notes of the chord, i.e. Cmaj7 = R-3-5-7. Start with just the root note per beat R-R-R-R then add a 5. Try R on the first beat and 5 on the 3rd beat. This will also work R-5-R-5 then bring in the 8 for R-5-8-5. That generic lick will play a lot of rhythm bass. When that flows then get the correct 3 and 7 into the mix. Yes, b3 and b7 for minor chords R-b3-5-b7 for Cm7.
Just offering this as something to think about. Follow the chords and drop into a groove with the drummer. Yes and use fake chord sheet music right at first.
I get the chords from Google by using these search words; chords, name of the song. Fake chord has the lyrics with the active chord shown above the lyrics. Follow the chords...
When you turn Pro you will have to leave the music stand and the fake chord sheet music at home, but, fake chord is IMO a good way to get started. Why? The band director's I play for always hand out fake chord - and everyone plays from that. So you kinda need to know how to read and play from fake chord. Standard Notation lead sheets later...

Run the box with your scales and or arpeggios so your fingers and mind work together. See a chord, or scale, and then find the correct notes within the box. About a zillion times should do it.

welcome to talkbass! if any of those "very talented musician neighbors" are teachers = take some lessons! learning tunes is great --- learning music is priceless! also: you'd get the advantage of learning (being able to inquire about) good technique from the get-go...which will benefit your playing, always. if they're great players but not real teachers = get a teacher! good luck with your bass playing!
