Trace Elliot AH1200-12

Just got new Trace Elliot set up after using Warwick Extreme 10.1 for years!! I've used most stuff from Hartke, Peavey, Ampeg and Tech 21 but this new Trace rig is most impressive!! Never been their biggest fan till now!! It has a massive 1200w and it does do it!!!! The valve drive and blend goes from off, right up to John Entwhistle filth!! And the separate hi/low and full range FX loop means i can run distortions and filters through hi and eq's and other stuff on full range!! It also uses separate compression for hi/low end!!! Very useful indeed!! I run two 800w 4/10's and two 500w 1/15's massive sound at festivals!!!

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but I guess it is better than opening a new one, since it is relevant to AH1200-12!
I finally have decided to get back to playing again after almost 20 years of inactivity
So I have just got hold of a TE AH1200-12 (600w @4ohm x 2 channels) and I now am faced with the huge dilemma of what to pair it with. Portability of the cab/s is not key for me - but of course equal greatness I would go for the more portable just in case! - so I guess that gives a bit more flexibility in choice.
I am after a solution that can have “hi-Res” or hi-fidelity in a sense (I guess I live in dreamland of a noise-free audio world, and used to listening to music with amps that have >120dB SNR...), and like to hear nuances in the music (the downside being “garbage-in/garbage-out” an di the garbage would be provided by yours truly until I practice enough lol!) so I am not sure what solution can be good for me without breaking the bank (so at this stage max £1000 also second hand - $1300?).
I almost want to move to 5 string bass (at the moment I have my old Warwick thumb bolt-on of 20 years), so tight and present low end is also needed, but I really require full range with good “slapping performance”, presence and articulation.
I have come across few potentials so far:
- Trace Elliot 1084H (1600W on 4OhM / 3x800W 8Ohm, 103dB/Wm) - but lower than max budget
- MarkBass Ninjia 122 (2x12 plus tweet, 800W 8Ohm, 103dB/Wm) PLUS MarkBass Ninjia 121 (1x12 plus tweet, 800w 8Ohm, 99dB/Wm) - lower than max budget
- Aguilar DB112 PLUS DB112NT (600w total, 300W @8ohm + 300W @8ohm, is achy fed by one channel of the TE, sensitivity is quite lower though, mid-90sdB/Wm, and frequency response not quite that low) - lower cost (2/3rds)
- find 2 x 1048h from TE, 800W @8ohm each - cheaper (or similar to the Aguilars) I found one currently.

These are options I have at the moment, and I could possibly get hold of any of them, so I was hoping I can get your wisdom on what you think the best pairing would be for the AH1200-12!!!

Thanks a million!

Congratulations on the head. I kind of want one of those, even though I really can't justify it, but I'd love to have a beastly true stereo setup for effects laden 6 string stuff. But I have essentially half of one of those (the AH 600-12), which is awesome and is currently my main rehearsal head, and sometimes gigs

Anyway, I think a good choice would be a couple of the GK NEO 212s. 600w a piece and sound great and about 50 pounds each. If you're going to cart around a nearly 50 pound, 1200w head your cabs should measure up. Like a pair of single 12s is going to just be ridiculous with that head. I would you definitely want a pair of something to take advantage of the dual power sections (whether or not you ever use the stereo capabilities), and I would say 2x10s would be the smallest you'd want to go. So 2x10s, 2x12s, 4x10s, or maybe 1x15s would be the way to go. I use my 600 with a Genz Benz 410, an SWR Goliath III 4x10, or a pair of Genz Uber Quads (each one has a 12, 2 8s, and a tweeter, and I would consider equivalent to about 75% of a typical 4x10 in terms of volume).

But you can't just go with a cheap 200w 2x10. The smaller you try to go, the more high end you'll have to go to have the power handling you need. And at some point numbers just become numbers and not a representation of real world actualities. Like if someone tells you they have a 1000w 2x10 cab, they're full of it. So be wary of speaker cabs that are way on the small side yet boast seemingly impossible power ratings, because they probably are impossible.

Anyway, good luck.

Thanks a lot, @OmegaMonkey!

I was thinking that using a pair of cabs (or the 1084h in stereo, even at 8ohm) will not strain the amo so the amo
Will be protected, whilst also protecting the speakers because the power delivered to them at 8ohm is probably around 360W per channel, and an 800W 8ohm speaker really can only handle properly around 2/3 of their nominal power (so around 530), so even close to the Max aputput of the amo the speakers will be fine.

I will try to find those you suggest, but it is not so easy and I may not find them for a long time (so I am cables at the moment! Only the head!) and I cannot drive them from the buyers so need them shipped (which poses again more restrictions).
The ones i mentioned, I have found them already, so I guess I need to figure out whether any of those are good options and can handle the B string of a 5 string bass properly, and maybe tuned to A as well?

What do you kind people think?

Thanks again!

I have the opportunity to get a 1048h and a 1818 (with the 18 inch woofer), I am thinking that they could be a solution (each driven by one channel)? Although their rates lower is different (800w for the 1048h versus 500w for the 1818). What do you kind people think? Thanks a lot!

I don't know, go try em out. It will probably work fine together, wattage wise, because they both handle more than the amp is putting out at 8 ohms (times 2 power sections). I would imagine though that you would get even better results if you add a proper 2 way active crossover, so you can biamp. Sadly, the AH 1200 12 only has a sort of pseudo crossover built in, which is fixed at a pretty high frequency. You would want one set at maybe 100 Hz or somewhere in that neighborhood. The good news is those are pretty cheap (a good one is maybe 150-200 new) and you would already have everything else you need besides the cables to hook it up.

If they're at a proper music store, see if they have a crossover you could try them with. You'll plug the "full range" output of the head into the input of the crossover, then the low out of the crossover into either the left or right input on the head, and the high out into the other side. That's how you will get a proper biamped setup with that head.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion! I will definitely check this out with a music store.
I have just got the 1048H and 1818, and hooked them up to the AH1200-12, for the first time today. The sound seems ok although there is a distinct kind of prrrrrrrr when pulling the strings if the VALVE circuit is on and it comes from the 10 inch speakers rather than the Horn (which is what I thought would have been more plausible). It is like a vibration of some sort, but I am. It sure! I have noticed that the LED light of the VALVE section is red - is this normal? Or should it be green like the light of the PRE-SHAPE section? I am fearing something is wrong with the valves or the circuit, given that noise? Aaaasrrrgghhhhh

Is it newer Peavey Trace or 90's vintage?

I think all the LEDs on the amp are single color, so whatever color it is is fine. The only thing they do is either go off or on, except the mute switch which blinks when the amp is muted.

I'm not really sure what you mean by the sound you're describing. But if you had a loose ground connection in the bass, or a loose connection in one of the cabs, it could cause some funky and intermittent noises especially when touching or not touching the strings. Try each cab by itself, and try each one with 2 or 3 different basses to see if you can isolate where the problem is coming from.

And DownUnder, it's one of the Peavey models. I don't think any earlier iteration of Trace had a 1200w amp. I think there was an AH 1000-12 in the previous iteration (Gibson?). This amp is essentially the same design as that, at least in terms of features, but with much different aesthetics and likely some different component values, etc... But it's a beastly series of amps. I had the head from a 1210 combo first (which unfortunately then got damaged and is waiting to be parted out). Then I picked up an AH 500-7 (which is Peavey owned, UK made iteration with the simplified 7 band EQ preamp). And then finally found another AH 600-12 (same exact thing as the 1210, just in a slightly different chassis).

Ok I will test each cab with both channels and with Valve circuit engaged and disingaged, and with two basses (a 4 string Warwick Thumb bolt on and a 5 string Ibanez SR5005) and see if I can isolate the problem a bit better!

Re: Era, yes OmegaMonkey is correct, Peavey era (I can even see the toroidal transformer is Peavey).

I am exploring tones etc., there is quite a vast range of possibilities given by apre-Shape, Valve, blending of them, 12 band equalisation, compression etc! I think the two cabs give it quite a full range sound, especially the low end is quite full on the B string of the 5er., but it will take me a while to explore! And I have not even tried with the cross over stuff!

By the way, what does SM front end mean?

I think the article thing about power is, at least from my point of view, the headroom available, as I am not so much interested in the SPLs. The dynamics should be good but I hope that the actual components have no problems, and maybe if there is something , that it is just maybe the valve in the pre amp, which is very easy to replace! Loose connection on the speakers - that would require removing them from The front I guess, because I could not we easy access from the back...

Has any of you tried the 1600W 1084H 8x10” sealed cab made by trace? It can be driven in stereo on 2x8ohm or in mono on 4OhM. I wonder what the low end would be compared with my 1048h-1818 combination, given that it is a infinite baffle cab design!!!

But I would really like to also try a pair of Barefaced Big Twin II, or even just one, to see what it is like!
