The band i'm in are travelling to Japan to do about 10 gigs in a few months just wondering what gear all you more experienced players take when travelling abroad?It's my first trip so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Can you tell us more details? What kind of band is it,what size gigs are they? Are you flying in with just instruments? If so, I'd suggest that you try to rent gear there. The times I've played gigs like this, we've rented all our gear. Much cheaper than bringing amps,drums,keys,etc. Are you working with a local promoter? They may be able to help. Good luck!

Just bring you instrument, pedals, etc. Check with the airline if you can take your bass into the plane with you (not in the hold).
I hope you have an agent at the other side to organise, gear, accommodation, transport, venues, money, etc.
Otherwise its not worth it IMO.

american/ european phones etc. don't work there,
but internet is available.
don't forget you'll need step up power converters for the 120 volt gear you do bring...(or 220 if you are from europe)
renting backline will be cheaper than paying for a carne and shipping.
make sure visas are in order... the japanese are very particular about work visas...

I take a bass and whatever pedals I might need (and no more than that) when I go on trips, and then I rent amps when I'm there. Unless you're in a band like Nine Inch Nails where the gear is all inter-connected and being manipulated by others in the band, you really don't need to spend the ridiculous amounts of money it takes to ship amps on a plane.
