i'm really very sorry that the Traynor died on you. That's one thing that they are not known for.

Reading that you think that overdrive is "glorious" explains a lot. This is probably where our disagreement (friendly I hope) comes from. I detest any kind of distortion in my tone. I love the sound of tubes, every amplifier I own has them in the chain, but it's clean for me.

I hope that your search for tone Nirvana is not a lengthy one.

I've not tried the SVPCL but the pre-amp I use is full tube and uses the B15N tone stack. No need to reinvent the wheel there. If you are interested it's featured in the amp guts thread.

The Low Range Expander is more like a mid-range control. The High Range Expander is basically like a presence control. On my YBA-1A, the controls are subtle but do work.

I haven't been at the guts of a YBA-1A, but the YBA-1 is the same circuit as the Marshall plexi (circuit 1987), with a couple different component values.

Normal and Bright inputs with a gain stage for each -> cathode follower driving a bass/mid/treble tone stack -> long tail phase inverter with presence knob -> EL34 output stage.

The 'low range expander' is the mid range knob, the 'high range expander' is the presence knob.
