TRAYNOR YBA-200 - major issues! feedback appreciated

L&M and Yorkville (who make Traynor) are owned by the same family (The "L"). L&M ships the units back to the Yorkville plant for repairs. But, any tech can get some problems wrong.

My suggestion is to take it back to L&M, and say that the same problem has occurred after one month.

The thing that is cool about L&M and Yorkville is that they are pro-musician, so I would be surprised if they didn't help.

A fix and upgrade is in order i think " when it is a design problem "it's their responsability to make it right, i also thought the transformer was a little small for that amp as well,i am also seeing alot of them for sale ,thats a bad sign, let us know what happen's

Hi T40.

As others have mentioned, please contact [email protected] directly re getting your YBA200 repaired and upgraded to the YBA200-2 spec.

now will traynor do this without any questions asked? (seeing as i did not buy it new and there is no longer a warranty) i was curious if i should go to the repair shop (Long and McQuade - authorized Yorkville/Traynor dealer) first to explain the situation or just skip the middle man and go right to traynor?

Skip the middle man.

If I were in your position, I'd e-mail Traynor first because the YBA200 has a known problem re its auto-biasing feature which was/is remedied via the YBA200-2 upgrade.

I wouldn't expect them to repair an out-of-warranty amp for free, but I WOULD expect them to fix THEIR design fault it at a reasonable cost.

Go ahead and contact the folks at T'. They won't bite. :)

i think youve been talking about what to do for too long now and you've gotten your answer multiple times...call traynor directly, it IS their problem to deal with and you were wronged....dont tell them you werent the original purchaser unless they ask, no matter what the warranty would be up correct? so it doesnt matter who bought what when, your serial number will tell them when it was manufactured and possibly purchased. i was interested in this amp but i think i might end up going with the peavey of equal value as my step into tube heads...keep us updated on how this goes, im having the exact same problem with my bx500 and carvin, i just gotta call them, they should be either replacing it or fixing it as there was a definite known issue and admitted to us there was right on talkbass. goodluck my friend

I cannot comment on the particulars of your case. But I must say I have always received excellent service from Long and McQuade. They have never left me blowing in the wind. In particular, I find teh staff at teh Burlington L&M to be the excellent.

I only had one repair issue...the repair guys dropped the ball on a guitar setup for my son. They fully refunded me the setup cost, no questions asked.

I am confident that between L&M or Yorkville sound, they will help you out. Ask and you shall receive...

UPDATE:

so i contacted the repair department at Long & McQuade and they took a look at the amp. They had to replace some cathode resistors due to the tubes blowing. They also replaced all four tubes this time. I asked about the biasing issues on this model of YBA200 stating that I was concerned that this may be a problem seeing as the repair did not include an upgrade to the YBA200-2 circuit. They mentioned that during the first repair they had only replaced 3 of the 4 tubes, thus the biasing issues - which lead to the tubes blowing a second time. The repair shop assured me that there should not be any further biasing problems seeing as they replaced all 4 tubes at once this time around. HUGE bonus --> all the work done was Free of charge.

I just had one concern; shouldn't they have the amp sent off to traynor to upgrade to the YBA200-2 circuitry to avoid Any biasing issues? Does this mean that next time i have to replace one tube, I will have to replace all four?

once again, your feedback is much appreciated!

The whole point of an auto bias scheme is to be able to replace just one tube and for the amp to cope with that. If all four tubes red plated then there was a total failure of the bias supply. That needed to be attended to. It sounds to me that the first tech did not attend to the underlying problem and just fixed the results. Thus your amp ran away again.

In your place I would drive out to Pickering and take the amp directly to Yorkville. IIRC it's the Whites road or Brock Road exits on the 401. You'll be able to see the factory on your right from the east bound lanes.

I hope you get your problem sorted.

Paul

Glad to see U got at least some part (hopefully the MAIN part) of your prob sorted- & free of $$$. As it should have been.
As a side note here, I recently bought a YBA200 2nd hand & she's functioning wonderfully-I'm in Australia, so I can't drive on up to the Traynor Co. for this.... BUT- SHOULD I consider getting the 'upgrade' done to mine-the YBA200-2 upgrade where a bias control is added rather than the auto-biasing feature it has now?????
IF this is a good idea & IS recommended- is there some specs available e.g. for download.... So I could get my local Tube amp tech to do this for me??

Thanks,
Rod
