what is the purpose of notating tremolo within a bar, with a crotchet, and a minim? Is it to identify the downbeat, if no other tempo markings present (eg diminuendo)?

Sorry, all good, I figured it out.The intention in the score was to lead to a crescendo, hence the tremolo marking for crotchet and minim were intended to create that effect - Phantom of the Opera down bow "dramatic" chromatic run/theme.
