Tribute L2000, picky little details.

I'm considering buying a G&L Tribute L2000, among a couple others, and it's down to some minor details now. I was hoping you all could help clear up some things not clear from my searches.

1.) Is the Tribute L2000 not available in Green Burst finish? I am in love with that finish.

2.) I've heard some complaints about noisy pots, and about hum in certain settings. Is this true for all of these, or probably just a few ('stuff happens').

3.) Looking at a couple of places I can order online, it seems I have no neck options (other than fretboard wood, rosewood or maple), Is there just one neck profile available for the Tribute (not a huge concern for me, just curious)?

For 1) and 3) its a no.
Part of making such a cheap great bass is limiting the options, so theres just one type of neck and 5 different finishes.
The blueburst finish is a great option though

It has the same electronics as the USA made G&L's

I have a USA L2000 and although I usually play it in passive mode, I've never had any hum or noise from the pots when I use the preamp. I love my L2K and recommend them to anyone who asks.

Remember that the Tribute is a great bass, but is a $600 bass. Corners are cut on the Tributes that are not cut on USA G&Ls, and they have much fewer options. If they didn't cut the corners, they would be $1,200 basses too.

I seem to recall that the problems with "noise" were on the older ones.

I ended-up with a Fender (MIM) Jazz, but in my recent shopping I found ZZounds.com very good to deal with. I don't recall them having any choice in necks, though.

My G&L Tribute L2500 have no noise or hum when i use both passive or active mode.

Like someone mention they cut corners on some options like color, fretboard etc so you are limited on the tribute series but overall the bass is great.

Same electronic as the USA one, play one and you will know why G&L is so great.

+1 I have owned two Tributes and had zero problems with the electronics.

All-in-all, Tributes are a fantastic value -- especially on the used market.

No, but the treble and bass controls are cut only to begin with. Don't worry; there is plenty of thump and zing in those instruments without boosting anything.

No hum like I experienced with my MIA Fender V.

If you can deal with a "P" neck, get it now!!

One of the best sounding basses I have ever heard at any price.

You will need to do a setup, did my own, and now it's totally unstoppable. I've gotten numerous, numerous complements on the tone, action, finish.

Mine is Natural.

Either way, the Tribbies are fantastic basses. Not a hum, nor a hint of a noise in this thing. Getting used to the more P-bass type neck has been easy and I am liking it more all the time.

I think yes and no. A major part of that $1200 goes into US labor cost. Yes, some cheaper parts are used, and are cheap because they are manufactured from original US Spec but made in China.

So the quality in craftsmanship on the Tribute vs. US model is probably a lot closer than on might think.

Same pups same preamp different pots different tuners and different bridge (Bridge is a copy of the US model made overseas)

I remember the noisy pots were on earlier G&L tributes, and if you contacted G&L they would send you new ones for free I believe. Either way they're great bargains and yes you're pretty limited on the neck option(none basically) and greenburst isn't available on tributes, unless all TB wants to start a petition

The switches are not the same. The tuners are not the same. The ferrules for the neckthrough string holders are not the same. The neck on the Tribute is flatsawn; the neck on the USA G&L is quatersawn and bicut. The American version also offers far more options like fretless, different colors, top wood, and binding.

I have owned a Tribute and a USA G&L. Both are fine basses, but there is a difference.

I loved my Tribute except for the sharp fretwork; I foolishly let it go and now miss it greatly. I will likely buy another and get the frets dressed. The electronics are awesome, period.
