I had my hearing checked and thankfully I have excellent hearing

I attribute this to me being very careful about loud music and using my Westone custom fit earplugs with filters (no this isn't a plug, but they've served me well for 15 years)

So the audiologist made molds from my ears as I went in there to see what kind of in ear monitors I can get. Unfortunately she wasn't familiar with these products but she called her Westone rep. (She deals with Westone exclusively)

I have a set of Shure SCL5s I borrow from the church that frankly sound pathetic... except for a couple of times when I got the fit just right.

So my question is, should I get a custom earpiece like the UM56 to use with the Shures...

Or something more fancy? My budget is $250

Thanks for your help

If you're talking about the "pathetic" Shures you've used at church, you've already answered your own question: why buy something you know you don't like?

I've invested in high quality headphones, and in the process of researching them, came upon lots of good information on In Ear Monitors, both here on TB, and on Link Removed

From what I recall, most bassists prefer an IEM with three drivers, utilizing custom molds.

This is one instance where the search function is definitely your friend! Enjoy the adventure!

Had a look at the linked website, and the UM56s are a smaller mold compared to all their other "ES" options. Their "ES" options are all similar in design to the earplugs I had made for my Shure SE530s, and offer incredible isolation.

I got the UM56 for my Westone UM2 IEM. To answer your question about the shure monitors. If you don't like the sound of the shures don't invest in getting the molds made. Personally, I would try comply foam tips with it first to get a good seal and see if it makes a difference. I used to use comply foam with my UM2s, great isolation and great bass response. I just got tired of having to change them out because of getting dirty so easily. The UM56 tighten up the bass response because of the tighter seal and also increase the left/right soundstage. They made great IEM even better.
