I was think about modding a boss that I have with 3 Dark Star Pick ups. I'm thinking may be going a little overboard. Are there any basses around that have triple DS set ups, or am I the only one stupid enough to consider it?

I don't think it's too far overboard. Might look and sound pretty freakin cool. I mean, the new EBMMs are rocking 3-single coils... so why not?

They may look cool, but how would the arrangement *sound*, isn't that the real question?

I recall seeing a bass around here with 3 DS's shoved in, I think it was an old hollowbody.
I love Dark Stars, I have a Glaub with one and a Lakland hollowbody with two. Three might be overkill, though. And keep in mind that those suckers are powerful. The combined magnetic pull on the strings from three DS's might be too much.

I wonder if Fred weren't such a busy guy if he could custom wind a set of 3 that would sound good without too much magnetic pull.
yes yes yes! KILLER looking bass. i love dark stars. getting rid of my Lakland Hollowbody ranks right up there with the rest of the "worst decisions i've ever made in my whole entire life".
I'm afraid that the output will be too much. It'll definitely look sick, and I think it'll have a bunch of great tones. Yet the string pull from the magnets may also dampen the sustain. Another potential downer would be the noise from 3 single coils. I don't know how I could wire it to be hum cancelling. Maybe someone can shed some light on this as well.
Well, as single coils go they are fairly quiet. You could do the Alembic and PRS thing and have 4 pickups with one just a dummy coil. Mix in the dummy coil appropriately phased for hum cancel. That's what PRS did back in 88.

Dummy coil would be hidden so it would look like just 3 from the front. Given the width of those pickups you may have problems with pickups getting in way of playing. Lots of people find 3 humbucker gutars annoying, the Strat having enough space in between that it works.

A dummy coil could work. But if they're quiet enough i can live with a little hum. I think using a middle DS as a prop would look sick, but it would be a very expensive paperweight. I'm going to be using a Ripper Copy husk, so real estate for the pickups and dummy coil isn't really much of an issue.

I'd be down. I sold what I thought was my dream bass because of awkward thunderbird ergonomics. DS fenderbird was killer. I'm lying in wait for another DS Bass.
