Trouble with a DD3

My son bought a DD3 from the local shop yesterday. He's having trouble that I'll try to explain. He has it lined up from his bass straight into is PF500. Bass-->DD3 input-->Output to PF500-->speaker cabinet.

When he starts rolling it sounds great initially but then he gets a weird "popping" or "puffing" noise, or maybe it's feedback. I can't explain it any better than that. No fault lights come on and there are no other weird sounds. He has another multi-function pedal that has never had this sort of trouble.

He's tried tweaking the settings on the pedal, but it eventually comes back to the same problem. I don't use pedals so I have no idea what to tell him.
Any thoughts? I'm hoping this is a super common problem and my search-fu just let me down.

I don't know exactly what you're trying to say but I've never had any problems with my dd-3 and nothing that sounds like that has ever happened.

Boss has a knob labeled "effect vol" or something like that. Try rolling it back some. But, sounds like you may have a bad pedal.

Thanks fellas. I can't imagine that this would be a "roll back the effects issue". I know I didn't explain it well, but I couldn't think of what words to use.
My son is going to take it to a friend's house after work today and see if they can figure it out. Otherwise we'll return it on Monday.

I REALLY appreciate the input. The whole reason he steered himself towards Boss pedals is they are supposed to be the most simple and straight froward.

No ability to record sound or video at this point.
