Most talented guys I met won't play four chords and the truth unless the money is right in fear of degrading their image.

True or false? Why?

Because the more talented musicians/bands build a solid fan base of people who have a legitimate interest in their music... they're not just there to "rock out" to the chorus of the song, and their not just taking a girl there so they can get laid.

The reason they are less popular is because the majority of people get bored with familiar faces/sounds. That's why pop music runs such a wide gamut and changes as the time goes on. Who knows what pissed off teenagers will be listening to next: Grunge... Nu Metal... Emo... ___________.

But prog bands, for example, like Jethro Tull and King Crimson have a rabid following and have been at it since the 60s. Because they're actually talented and write good songs: But, it's not what the majority wants to hear.

It's true, bands like the Stones are exceptions.

I was thinking on this one for a while and couldn't really come to a conclusion whether its true or false.

Thankfully we live in a time where most major bands don't have to worry about musicianship, talent or song writing any more. As long as a producer is writing good songs for them to play and an engineer can fix all the playing mistakes in production I think the whole notion of attributing a band's longevity/popularity to any of its its own musical attributes is passé.
