Truss Rod Adjustment Question

Hey. I have a question about adjusting the truss rod on my bass. When I move the truss rod, should I remove the strings or does it not matter?

And if it means anything, I own a 5-string Fender Deluxe Active Jazz bass.

You don't need to remove the strings, but you might have to loosen them a bit to turn the allen. It is a good idea to loosen the strings a little anyway to take some of the pressure off the neck. Loosen the neck adjustment slightly to be sure it moves ok , (if it doesn't want to loosen up you might have a problem that requires a pro),then tighten it up to take off the relief you want.

Loosen the two middle strings that the adjustment tool will go between for turning the truss rod. I loosen them enough to lift them out of the nut slot so I can turn the allen wrench without it being stopped by those neighboring strings. Loosening strings for tension purposes is more important to correct too much bow, making neck straighter. Loosening the two middle string specified takes enough tension off though. So you dont need to loosen the other strings. Just do a quarter to max half turn of truss rod at a time. Unless youve been doing trussrod adjustments form a few yrs and are very familair with the bass in question. Ussually two quarter turns is the most adjustment ever needed unless necks badly bowed or backbowed.
