truss rod question

what is the common truss rod used on a bass that has 6 strings therefor making the neck very very thin?

Are you asking which type of truss rod will allow you to make the thinnest neck for a 6 string bass? Not sure I understood your question.

To my knowledge the truss road for a 5er would be the same as those for a 4 stringer. Some 5, 6 and above use two truss rods if the neck is particularly thin. Then again, neck thickness is up to you.

I have talked to the main builder at Dingwall about 6 string necks, he recommends using one truss rod plus graphite re-enforcement on both sides of the truss rod, thus making it so you can make a thinner neck with it still having a strong support.

But seriously, folks. The LMI rods are the smallest reliable production rods that I've seen, but they require a lot of custom work to install.

LMI rods aren't real tough, 1/4" wide slot, 3/8" deep, 23 3/4" long slot, with 1" access past nut for allen key(at body end). Pretty straight forward, single action rod you can get thin with(as in Jazz bass thin) but is much more difficult to put in. Also the dual leaf (rickenbacker style) allows for thin necks,but make sure it's cold rolled steel, as hot rolled doesn't retain the spring and stiffness.
