Once again, I was about to post a question here on TB, and just before I clicked post, I thought "wait, this has probably been discussed before... lemme search for it first"... and boom! there it was!

Sometimes I think people don't do that enough around here. My 2 cents.
Wait... now that I think about it... THIS has already been discussed before too! Lol!
Oh well... (as he clicks "Create Thread")

It often is highly dependent on the topic. I've searched for things I know will have been discussed a thousand times, but if there's any hardware involved at all, what comes up are pages and pages of classifieds where that item has been offered for sale or trade. Sometimes I do that search and end up posting a new thread, and the first three responses are "use the search engine."

So there's that. And then there's the thought that maybe people who are newer to the forum have the same rights to discuss topics that others found interesting six or seven years ago. It's easy enough to ignore a topic you're not interested in.

And finally, on those occasions when someone does actually a) use the search engine and b) produce a relevant thread, posting to that thread will earn you a hand slap for reviving a necro thread.

So really, the only way to keep everyone happy is to not post anything, ever.

I've seen folks slapped around here for posting a thread they "should have searched on". A few threads down someone else is getting slapped around for reviving a necro. Can't win. :rollno:

If you aren't interested, just pass by it.

No, no. If no one posts anything people will complain about Talkbass being boring. :laugh::roflmao:

Nothing wrong with searching. IMHO using Google and including the term "Talkbass" usually provides better results than the Talkbass search engine. The problem is threads often ramble around aimlessly off topic, so reading the search results can be frustrating and uninformative. It's more engaging to ask a question, and this give you the opportunity to try and keep the thread on track...but good luck with that!

Talkbass has been around for a long time. I doubt there is very much going on that has not been discussed multiple times, except discussions of new gear.

IMHO, In order to keep Talkbass a living and vibrant community people need to be free to ask questions without being censured. When you get tired of answering the same old questions, just ignore them, and if you can't, perhaps you should log off and go practice instead of discouraging the fresh crop of newbs.

To be honest, things around here seem a lot better currently than it did a few years back. I notice less spell and grammar police responses, and also less people who routinely pop into threads only to somewhat rudely tell people to use the search feature. Instead of telling someone to use the search feature, I often demonstrate how to do it, and provide a few relevant threads they may find interesting...Instead of attacking someone and making them feel small and stupid, "teach them to fish."

I've caught myself doing this or about to do this a few times. It's easy to forget to double check the dates. But if the thread and post is old, it's pretty unlikely the original poster will care that you responded seven years later. :)

Unless it concerns a P Bass or tort, then the fanbois come out of the woodwork.
There is a new P-bass thread every 6 hours......it might be state law.
(Oh and the "should I bring a spare bass" topic is golden lately)

Well I just did a pickup swap with someone. They asked me my view on the tone profile of it.
I gave it, but knowing what a button pusher suggesting a search can be, I suggested doing one to get a broader sample of the general opinion of its tone.
They did. No hassle. A good time was had by all. The swap went off without a hiccup.
