trying to find a suitable bass

Hello!
I'm quite new to the whole world of bass, but I think the time is right to buy an electric bass. I have a cheap acoustic (Dean EAB Playmate), it has worked wonderfully so far but its not quite right, and I need something else to play with friends.
I've learned a whooooole lotta Muse, a fair deal of Chili Peppers (taught mahself higher ground :smug:, way too proud of this feat), so kinda funk, lotta prog rock, bit of classic.
thought about buying an OLP, heard they were great basses as far as the money goes, and im on a budget (-$200), oh yeah and for the record ive been scouring ebay and craigslist hahaha
just thought id get a second opinion!
Thanks
-Nick

I've been looking a lot at the squire classic vibe basses. The two precision models both sound and play very good IMHO... I much preferred them to the base MIM Precision, although the MIM may be a bit sturdier over the long haul.

Thanks!
But what i'm really kinda askin here is how the OLP sounds and how it is in terms of reliability, because chances are im using it for awhile haha.
Ive read reviews and kind of gotten mixed messages, but of course im going to look into some other basses... squiers from fender?

Based off the music you listed, I'd say you should not get P-bass. Assuming you want a similar sound to those bands. The OLP may be your best bet, or maybe a Jazz of some kind. SX may be your best bet also. They get great reviews for basses in that price range.

I tell you for under 200 you can't go wrong with the Ibanez GSR200's. That was my first bass about a year and a half ago. I have since owned two more basses and still go back to the Ibanez when it comes to slapping (It is very quick and has great slapping tone.) Of course with it being a lower end bass you will get some rattling but if you really learn how to fret well you will be fine.
