Trying to identify strings on used bass, help wanted!

Hello!

I bought a used bass, the previous owner doesn’t know what strings are on it.

The ends that go into the bridge have no color. However, there are these sort of beads around the strings that go around the headstock. Pics included. I’ve never seen this before…

Anyone know what strings these are?

Those spiral wires at the tuner ends tell me they're Warwick Red Labels. Not sure nickel or stainless from the pic, though.

Hey everybody. I'm opening this thread to share my experience (and discuss yours) with the best bang for the buck nickel string sets I've tried (and been consistently using for the past 5-6 years). I know we're all used to the WAY MORE COMMON stainless still Warwick Reds (in fact only place in the world that sell these nickel ones is thomann). I think because of those steels' bad reputation (justified, they feel horrible and die fast) not many people dare try these nickel Reds which, IME, are absolutely rocking.

Just a little background. At a time where I'd gig with some high profile acts...

Whatever they are,,,,i have a set installed on a used Japanese G&L i just picked up....so far they sound pretty good...

Warwick's is my guess? How old are they? Cut them off and put what you like on it. Looks like the strings were cut a little short anyway.

Use or borrow a friend's micrometer to measure string dimension. You may not find the millimeter dimension squares exactly with a particular string gauge, but it should be pretty close to something within a few millimeters. And then get the other string dimensions, and you'll know the size differences that will correspond to a string pack.

This should get you in the feel ballpark. Also look at mfgr website for references to string gauges. But still use a micrometer to see what's on YOUR bass.

Had the steel Red Label's on a used bass and absolutely loved em. Bought a new set to throw on a different bass and HATED them. Different instruments and all, but I suspect this is one of those strings that sounds better as it ages, at least in the case of the steels.
