Trying to Sound Like Zender...

Never seen the attraction woth Zender. Sure, the first few Jamiroquai albums were funky - great tunes. But Zender's sound was muted - especially live.

Also, the guy is a dick - real whiner. Wonder how come Warwick dumped him? Could it be because he let them down and did nothing but complain and expect the world to owe him something?

The comments seem rather harsh. I am no great fan of Stuart's, but I think that guy who posted the earlier comment is one of the typical "bedroom critics" who blast everyone while staying at home doing absolutely nothing themselves.

The first few Jamiroquai albums were so good because they featured great songs - and that is what made the bass even more attractive on them. Plus, Stu's playing on them was just fabulous - just so cool and funky. As far as him being a "whiner" - fastifriend, do you actually know the guy?

Perhaps you know him personally (I don't, so I can only speak from my perspective), but I've never heard anything which suggests that he is anything but a good guy.

As for His playing and sound , well, we all have our preferences. He's one of my faves and I love his tone, both live and in studio.

As for the SR5 remark, I honestly do not know what basses he used to record. I know I have seen pictures of Zender during his Jamiroquai days with an SR5. I also have a great deal of experience playing Stingrays and other basses with big a humbucker in the bridge position, and I have always been able to get a Bernard Edwards/Stuart Zender sort of sound very easily with them.

I know him personally, and to be fair, I've heard people complain about him, but he's always aces to me. Same with Flea, people say he's a jerk, but he's cool to me. Anyway, Warwick didn't dump him. The person he worked with quit the company, and he just didn't wanna deal with them any more. Plus, he went on an old school Fender kick.

Countless bass players own Warwicks thanks to Zender. Warwick's chrome "Ender" bass is even named after him. I think their endorsement relationship probably just ended because he was no longer in Jamiroquai and wanted to move on into new territory.

As for him being a "dick" -I don't think you could be further from the truth. He's always humble to his fans and seems like a great guy from all reports. I also think he has reason to be disappointed with how things turned out with Jamiroquai. He undoubtedly deserved to receive proper credit for his songwriting contributions, but had it thrown back in his face. If you've ever heard his work his AZUR or his solo songs, you'd see how talented the guy really is.

He also used light strings and action so he could dig into the strings for accents and stuff. .

Anyone know how light of gauge strings we are talking about. for this style of bass playing what are all you guys using? the standard gauge that would come on a Fender JBass, or are you guys stringing it w/something lighter and getting a new setup?
