I need one. Preferably a Sousaphone so it bobs up and down and all around when it gets played.

    That's all.

Ha! Funny. Honestly, the tuba is what got me started on bass. At the time I played all low brass. Band director walks up to me one day and says "Hey, I need you to play tuba in the jazz band." I said (in typical teenage style) "Uh..... that ain't cool. No thanks." Two weeks later he calls me into his office. He points to a brand new P bass and a Peavey TNT combo. He said "Jazz band starts in 6 weeks. You better get started."

    The rest is history.

To this day I still read on bass from my Arban's (sp) trombone book. It really gets you out of your bass guitar comfort zone.

  4. My son (Gatorbait) started on tuba in the 6th grade. Took up bass in the 9th grade and added stand up bass about halfway through that year. He is currently the director of the Cal. U. Marching band in Pa. He has played in pit orchestras and concerts on all three instruments and can play rings around me on the bass guitar.

  6. I considered taking up tuba last year, so I could be a low end all rounder, but I didnt have a lazy 20 grand or whatever they cost. Took up trumpet instead, maybe in the future ill.play trombone too, they sound so nice.

Fyi, brass instruments are hard. Damn hard.

  7. I was a tuba player before I took up bass guitar - I thought playing bass in a band would make me look cool (some hope)!.

I played trombone, but not tuba. Wish I had. I would love to get one and learn it just to play in one of the Christmas tuba concerts.

Just do it, GD. Your trombone training should help. Do it now!

I was playing first trumpet in my high school band. Sophomore year band director says to me; "I got 15 trumpet players and no tuba. We'll loan you a tuba and pay for lessons if you switch." I took him up on the offer. A few months later I sat down and there was a new piece on my music stand: Theme From Mission Impossible. I was hooked. Mom got me my first electric bass on my 16th birthday and the rest, as they say, is history.

Edit: I, too, would love to get a tuba but $$$$$$....
