tubes and funk playing?

I don't think color and funk don't necessarily go together.

BTW....when you say "funk" ...do you mean "slap"?

The SVT is very colored. "Back in the day", that is what Marcus used....it was a great slap tone.

The Sadowsky SA200 gets a great slap tone and so does that Trace Quatra/Hexa valves.

If one plays very "modern"..i.e. tight/fast slap, some tube amps might be too slow but those above aren't. You can even "quicken" up an SVT by eq'ing.

I think all-tube amps can be great for funk.

I love James Brown stuff, especially songs Bootsy was playing on. Tube amps can be awesome for that kind of finger-style funk.

I think just a tad of power tube overdrive is great when playing slap--it can add just a little grit to the highs, which I find is good for trying to get some Stuart Zender and Les Claypool tones.

Nicely said.

Tube amps... gritty ones, anyway... would only be a problem for those who want that uber-clean uber-crisp uber-polite modern soft jazz slap tone. Not my thang at all.

I use My 300PRO Bassman for our soul/ funk/ disco gig ALL the time & its the BOMB!!!!! Can go nice & brite & snappy &/or deep & round, punchy ALL the time. Tried S.S. & hybrids- had 2 go back 2 ALL tube- BUT thats just ME!

Can't agree more.. the Sunn/Fender 300 T/Pro with 410 cabs is IMHO the BOMB 4 any style.. And maby 4 BOMBS for Funk?? :D THe compression unit helps.. realy a world of difference to the SVT Classic 4 instance.. Havent regreted that switch one day..
