I think all-tube amps can be great for funk.
I love James Brown stuff, especially songs Bootsy was playing on. Tube amps can be awesome for that kind of finger-style funk.
I think just a tad of power tube overdrive is great when playing slap--it can add just a little grit to the highs, which I find is good for trying to get some Stuart Zender and Les Claypool tones.
I use an aggie DB359 and an aggie db680/728 (separately) for funk/slap/r&b all the time.
I use My 300PRO Bassman for our soul/ funk/ disco gig ALL the time & its the BOMB!!!!! Can go nice & brite & snappy &/or deep & round, punchy ALL the time. Tried S.S. & hybrids- had 2 go back 2 ALL tube- BUT thats just ME!
