Tuning BEAD: A Difficult Sacrifice or Good Riddance?

Now a question for Jauqo: Hey man, do you think that the pickups on your bass bring out the clarity of that low C#?

That's a great question that is ever so often overlooked.

All of my sub contra basses have custom wound pickups and custom pre's. And all the pickups on them are single coil(hum canceling)


I wanted a a pickup that would give me very clear and even open strings. but the quality of the strings play a part as well as the choice of body woods as well as neck and fingerboard woods.


These factors are more important than the amp and cab factor.


It at the point now that to hear people complain about not hearing a C# or F# is now falling on ignorance.

Given that most people cannot hear on the extreme ends of the human range, it makes sense that they cannot hear those fundamentals. Then again, the fundamental is not usually the most prominent harmonic anyway.

Makes sense- the bass is, after hands, the first and most important part of that signal chain, I should think. So you might have the diametric opposite of "mudbuckers" on there!

I am starting to believe this as well (without the drop C). I just set up my '78 P with 50-105 Chromes and DGCF tuning. I am sure that it will be perfect for my bar gig, but I will be trying it this week at rehearsal for my church thing as well. I am a little nervous about trying to read charts in a weird tuning, but if it works well, I may go back to fours and just live in this tuning. I put a piece of gaffer tape on the back of the neck at the second fret to help with visualization.
