Two Notes Revolt Bass

And the description Amy gives precisely captures what I love about my ReVolt.

Happily operating mine with a mids-adjustable boost/DI in front and at least a Dry Bell Module 4 in the effects loop

Yeah but I'm out of real estate on my pedalboard :) and I'm using it in 4wires mode so the loop is already busy.
Anyway, in a further version it could be great to have an all-in-one shaping solution that can improve usability and flexibility of all the channels. Also, the boost feature that is featured by the Revolt Guitar could be a good addon.

Hi @james81bong

I hope all is well. Ross from Two notes here and thanks to Amy for pitching in while I have been out of the office.

There should be no discrepancy phase wise between the channels, but please bear in mind these are voiced separately so there will be differences in the frequency content across the respective spectrums. The Two outputs (XLR and 1/4-inch Line) are both phase aligned and you should not notice any end-to-end differences in the phase alignment as it is an all-analog circuit. Are you using both outputs simultaneously? If so, what do you have these connected to?

Yeah I send the output jack to the CABM+ and then record its DI, but I also record the Revolt DI and the clean unprocessed bass signal with the REDDI. My gold standard is mix of these 3 sounds roughly at the same level. So phase issues could be a problem if I'm not careful :)

Hi @james81bong

Thanks for getting back to me. You may experience some phase issues with the C.A.B. M+ in the chain as there is digital latency here. You may find that using the Phase invert on the mic channels can help with this as well as setting your global latency preferences as low as possible via the cog menu. Let me know if you need some assistance with this and I will gladly help!

Thanks for the advise !! Just to understand better: the DYNIR models in the CABM+ are already built to have phase coherent mic models? When I sum 2 random selected mics in a preset without fiddling woth the phase invert button on them can I assume they're in phase between them and with the input signal? I guess that could not be guarantedd for external loaded IRs, but are the TwoNotes models aready built to provide phase-coherent signals? Or some of the mic models feateres natively a phase inversion?

Also, while listening to merged clean DI signal it's pretty straighforward to tell whenever phase cancellation occurs, while listening to a DI merged with a CABM+ processed signal is not so simple to tell when phase cancellation occurs (inverting phase on the mics model surely change the sound but it's not so obvious in which way since the processed signal have really different EQ than the DI). Do you have any tip or tool (software?) to share that could help in identifying without doubts when phase cancellation occurs?

Thanks in advance for the support, I'm a great fan of Two Notes product and I'm working actively to integrate them the best possible way into my board and my overall sound !

Hi @james81bong

Thanks for getting back to me. The DynIR mic channels are all phase aligned in C.A.B. M+ - you can put these out of Phase using the Phase invert switches. In addition, depending on how you have imported IRs, these can be set to be phase aligned.

Before transferring your Static IRs to C.A.B. M+, the Torpedo IR Format pane provides options to configure the Static IRs
  • IR LENGTH: Increasing the IR length will improve the resolution of the Torpedo processing (more precision will lead to better accuracy in the low end of your processed signal). Please note that a 40ms IR will take 2 slots in your C.A.B. M+'s internal memory.

  • IR OFFSET: You have access to 3 options that will change the way the IR file will be processed:

    • MIN PHASE: An algorithm will move the samples within the file in order that it will sound in phase with any other IR file (providing the same function is used to transfer the other Static IR file(s)).

    • MIN. IR LATENCY: The file is cut so there is no silence before the first sample, this can lead to a change in the tonality of the sound, but the impact on C.A.B. M+'s system latency will be minimal.

    • ORIGINAL: The samples in the file remain untouched. You may experience phase cancellation issues with mixing it with other IR files.
In order to check phasing between your DI feed and the C.A.B. M+ feed, the optimal solution would be to remove any post processing, instantiate only one mic and then bypass the processing on this - then, when turning on the mic you should hear any phase cancellation. Alternatively, you could record both your DI feed and C.A.B. M+ feed separately and load an EQ with a high resolution analyser set on a bus - route both channels to this bus and then mute one of the channels to see whether any content is being lost.

Let me know if this helps and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,

Ross

I received my Two Notes Revolt bass today and experiencing the same noise when the tube is engaged and popping when switching channels. Checked the firmware version and it's 1.13 so I'll need to order the midi cable to do the update, and having trouble finding one in Canada. It's unusable in a live situation until then unfortunately.

Other than that it does sound lovely and really adds some warmth and depth to my sound! Looking forward to a quiet version!

Just in case anyone experiences this in the future, I posted the video I had sent to Two Notes support outlining the issue I had, which was completely fixed by the Firmware update.

ok you guys at Two Notes you really want my wife to kill me, isn't it? You've just released the Opus and with EQ and Midi capability it will completely solve my concern about not having independent mid control over the 3rd channel of the Revolt. In addition, if I've understood correctly, it would be possible to set the line out jack routing using the preamp/eq/poweramp sections and bypassing the cab sims; this way I can use this into my amp on stage (exploiting the eq features) and going to FOH with the DI with also the cab sims. Did I got it right?

In any case, I've just ordered one so I'll discover soon :) also the color it's perfect to be coupled with the Revolt Bass, you little devils :) I'll post some pics of my updated pedalboard next week when I'll receive the Opus, thanks for making me almost a Two Notes endorser (without benefits) :D

Amazing @james81bong! Let us know how you get on and would love to see some pics in your set up!

In terms of routing, you are right on the money! :D

Questions about the Modern Drive and FX Loop.

1. Is MD Gain knob impactful when 100% Dry?

Someone elsewhere suggested running MD 90+% Dry with just a touch of hair. Does the gain control the degree of fizziness in that scenario?

2. Is the FX loop 100% wet by default, even when Dry?

As an aside, I appreciate how the VD/MD EQ is thoughtfully biased towards attenuation.

I'm going to comment in the interest of conversation and having asked this in the past with a Two Notes representative.

The #3 Channel, Modern Drive, has the assigned wet/dry MIX knob. The MD is the only signal going through the effects loop that is active by default. The GAIN effects the drive of the channel. The INPUT dry (assuming no other pre-ReVolt effects) signal is mixed with the MD channel creating a blended signal at the output.

What I cannot specifically state is exactly how Volume positioned pre-effects loop effects the dry signal if not being sent to the effects loop that is active by default?

The other question regarding "90+% Dry" and the gain control. This would mean 10-% MD being mixed with 90+% Dry signal. The MD channel signal would be present in the mix (and post-effects loop by default).

I have suggested to just zero the gain to take it out of the signal path and mix 100% Dry to go from the Input 1/4" jack to the Output 1/4" jack as a "direct" path to the C.A.B. M+/OPUS for an option requiring only one footswitch to basically bypass the ReVolt. The signal path may not be that direct, but it would involve the Volume control of #3 Channel, too, but have zero MD/Gain signal in the Output mix.

Here's a few pics of my updated pedalboard !!

I've already setted up the midi comms between the 2 units to get Presets 1,2 and 3 automatically selected as I select Ch1, 2 and 3 selected on the Revolt Bass. Also, when I bypass the Revolt it select automatically the Preset 4 (featuring also the Peggy preamp sim enabled).

Really cool and neat and I needed just to link the MIDI Out to the MIDI In with a generic TRRS cable (bought on Amazon).

Good work Two Notes !!

Ale
