I'm a bass newbie. Like, seriously fresh newbie. I just got a bass about a month ago and had a week vacation, so I've been playing for maybe 3/4 weeks? I don't know why I did it... I always wanted to be a guitarist, though I appreciated bass and other instruments, then one day I was like, "dude I need a bass. o.o and lessons." So I went to two stores before work and settled on a 4-string cherry epiphone (knock-off Les Paul) and scheduled lessons the next week. So far we've been working on 12-bar blues, the stereotypical stuff. On my own though I've been playing art punk. Oh, and have to use a guitar amp for practice at home. I don't have a bass amp yet, sadly. I LOVE the broody mood you can get with a bass melody. It's also manly. In short, bass is awesome!
Okay in terms of music I like: I'm all over the place. Probably 9-times out of 10 you talk to me you'll find I'm a j-rock weeaboo you'll want to avoid, very much into the 90's stuff like early Luna Sea and L'arc-en-Ciel. But that's really just the tip of the ice berg. I love nearly every kind of heavy metal that exists: traditional (Iron Maiden), doom (Sabbath), sludge (Eyehategod), drone (Boris, Melvins, Sunn 0))), etc.). I of course like rock, prog., folk, blues, jazz, stoner... I guess I even like some electronic stuff too!
So probably as long as you have ears we can discuss music of some kind -- and I expect all here do.
OH, and I've already had time to quit a "band" before it even got started. A drummer was trying to get me over to jam and I was wanting to experience playing with a full band so I was like, "Sure why not?". So I say, "I'm learning Seventeen Seconds by The Cure can we play that?". Had he said it was too slow, or somber, or just bad I would've been okay. But you know why we couldn't play it? Too long -- FOUR MINUTES IS TOO LONG! >_< Seriously!? I thought if you like rock you would be pretty flexible on song length -- at least up to like six minutes.
Ahaha, so I'm just rambling now. Nice to meet you all. I look forward to learning this lovely instrument, getting acquainted with you all, and meeting some more musically minded folks. Rock on.
edit: Oh, and the drummer guy? He even likes Metallica. How can four minutes be too long if you like Metallica?!
