Ukuleles are hip! Here is a recent NBC news story about the resurgence in popularity of the ukulele.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and Jake Shimabukuro are two that come to mind among the many wonderful musicians/ukulele proponents I've been fortunate enough to record.

Jake's new album is being produced by Alan Parsons. Hip enough for me.

Heck, Eddie Vedder did an album of nothing but uke like a year ago, and that was well after this trend was resurfacing.

Seriously, I have my dad's old uke, and apparently he could play it pretty well (he died when I was very young unfortunately), as could my grandfather on my mom's side. It's how I learned to play chords before picking up the guitar, and I love playing it.

At the music store where I work I sell one or two a week. And that's in a town of 35,000. Personally I think that on the whole they're kind of a joke but in the right hands can be pretty awesome. Jake's version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a fantastic example of what a uke can do.

Last summer, while honeymooning in Maui, I could not escape 2 things:

2) Jason Mraz's 'Im Yours'

Things were made worse by compounding the two into a single entity.

I have gigged with, and recorded with, Bill Tapia. Bill died recently at the age of 104, but was still active until the end. He was known as "The Duke Of Uke".
