I think Sadowsky NYC 5s with single coils are the ultimate jazzes because they have light chambered bodies and incredibly thin necks (front to back) made possible by graphite reinforcment rods (IMO, that also add to the attack of the bass); all of which are not available in their Metros. They also have well-balanced weight, little to no dead spots, even volume no matter where you are on the fretboard (unlike Fenders), 34" (unlike Lakland 5s), tight B, passive sound that rivals other bass' active sound (which is one of my favorite things about them), and if you get the single coils and turn up the VTC knob, you can get a Fender jazz sound as well. IMO, no other J bass offers all of these features and there's not a feature that the other basses offer that the NYCs do not, except string through body option, but the B is already tight and extra long scale strings can be a pain to find. However, as great as the Sadowsky jazzes are, I still prefer the Sadowsky NYC modern 24-5 with soapbars.

the Modern 24-5 Ash/Maple (metro) is where its at!![]()
It may not be the ultimate but it's the nicest I've ever owned -- and I have owned a BUNCH of 5-string JJ's.
I think the Yamaha Nathan East is a jewel that consistently gets overlooked. A little pricey but worth every penny ...

I've owned in the past:
Aleva Copollo LG5
Mike Lull (3 of them)
Nordy VJ5
Fbass VF5
Fender Jazz V Deluxe MIA
Fender Jazz V Custom Shop Classic
Fodera Emperor 5 Deluxe w/ JJ Pups
Out of all of them, Sadowsky has ended my gas for the ultimate JB. They're that good!, and I voted for
