Underpowered or broken?

Followed your advice tracebassplayer... no change.

I took the head in today to be checked out.

Something popped in the amp then, you say the speaker sounds fine with another amp head...
Running it at less than a 4 ohm load would likely cause the problem as Rune Bivrin pointed out.
Were you able to see the speakers "jumping" hard or did they not have much movement at all and just sound farty?

Yes, used another head and the speakers sounded fine.

I saw little to no movement on the speakers.

Just to clarify a point: turning the gain and volume up improved the sound from bloody awful to just awful. The louder I play a not with just finger-power, the worse it sounds.

I did test a guitar in the passive input, and it had the same awful distortion.

Plugged headphones in the head... it sounded soft but good.

Yeah, I think Rune is on the right track as well here, Problem in the final output section. The headphone circuit comes off the preamp side not the power. So, if the headphones sound good and the speakers don't - I say take it back and get a refund as defective unless you can get it repaired for less than 200.00 - almost the price of another one on average.

I bought it second hand - new is too expensive in South Africa (not Suomi despite the name ) .

May have been a voltage spike, too. I don't know how "reliable" you electrical system is down there...

Ohh.. BTW... did you see if the ground lift switch was grounded or lifted... that might be your problem...

Well, I have always had a strong affinity for north Europe (the land of my ancestors). In particular, I like Germany, Iceland, Scotland... Finland. I would move to one of those countries if I legally could do so.

My online nick has always been Stormcrow, but after Lord of the Rings came out at the movies, Stormcrow became popular... so I translated it into Finnish. Or, at least, I *hope* that is what I translated, and I'm not calling myself something embarrassing!

Looking at the pic you sent.. that's an older Series 6 GP12. not the newer GP12 I thought you had. That manual may not work for you... sorry about that, I'll dig around and see if I have the Series 6 manuals....

I know it is obvious.....but did you try a different speaker cable? and instrument cable?
